The not-Christmas songs Festivas winter playlist

as suggested by Min here it is time for the frustrated cyclists amongst us to put our headphones on and relax and wait for ridable streets to return, as no amount of frustration will melt the snow.

I believe Gembo and SRD were also referring to musical treats here (but I'm too uncultured to be sure!)

What's on the CCE seasonally appropriate but not "Christmas" songs playlist? Maybe they remind us of the cold, snow and winter time, or maybe they are the opposite and remind us of sunny, warm times. Anything goes. (Apart from Slade/Wizzard/In Dulci Jublio and the usual suspects from bad office Christmas parties)

    I shall start with;

Galaxie 500 - Listen, Snow is Falling (Yoko Ono cover)
Harold Budd & Cocteau Twins - Sea, Swallow Me

I believe that is someone so old even I don't know who he is.

I love The Snow is Falling by Debussy. Makes me feel cold.

There's another Stones song with a line about snow and "just another mad mad day on the road".

    UPDATE

Most bizarre - if you get to 4:02 "Yeah, I'm coming home", there's a fine illustration of Calton Hill, the NB and (original) Waverley Market!

  12. I've heard that on the radio a bit recently, I think it's probably the best version of the song I've heard. Noice. But could you not have found one with some moving pictures of the lovely Ms Tunstall??? :P

Sorry, that one was already doing my head in by 30 seconds
so I didn't get any further!

My favourite dysfunctional Christmas song is Joni Mitchell

I think you are forgiven (min / stepdoh) for choosing ones that pass the "not from a bad office christmas party test".

    One of mine too.

You can imagine this song being winter, "I went shopping today for jewels" isn't Christmas related!

It's only 20 years ago since Joni Mitchell was asked to leave The Doric. Her partner was unpleasant to staff there apparently.
We went to see here live at the Playhouse around the time of Wild Things Run Fast. A great show.

I hate dislike Santa songs. Except of course Eric Bogle's 'Santa B**** Claus'. This is not very pc but neither is the whole shop til you drop festive mania!

To get back to regaining the calm you need at this stressful time of year then Liszt's Scherzoso + Carillon from Weihnachtsbaum is good. Rhondda Gillespie plays solo piano of great beauty.

If you want something to outrock AC/DC then try Frank Zappa's San'Berdino. Lowell George was in this band I think.

American singer Joni Mitchell, who arrived at the Doric a while ago with her entourage who were the worse for drink. When the manager suggested they were a bit rowdy, a punch was thrown by someone in the group and the lot of them were ordered out. Perhaps it was the first time Joni had heard the time-honoured phrase: ''You're barred!'' Some time later a large group of Americans came in to dine at the Doric and when the manager asked how they had heard of the establishment, he was told: ''You're in a guide book for throwing Joni Mitchell out.'' Scottish hospitality: second to none

Yes Chrissie Hynde + the band know the genre.

I like that one a lot. Intelligent songwriting and not 'just for Christmas'.

It should automatically be set to "11" ;-))

Edited to add, nothing to do with Christmas but some who like loud may also like this most excellent cover of the Pirates of the Carribean theme ;-)

On Joni gets barred from The Doric.

I know of a guy who is a photographer and he was in a restaurant in Alaska and the only other diner had forgotten her glasses and he had to help her with identifying correct card for payment or somesuch so it became apparent that she was JOni. THe guy was starstruck and went in to the routine that many of us would do about how great she was blah blah (I would do this myself without a doubt). SO then Joni is able to get an extended listen to his accent and things turned a little frosty -she says - what is that accent and the guy says he is from Edinburgh. Joni - is that pub The doric Bar still there, yeah says the photographer - Joni - You know I am barred from there. I told this story to staff in the Doric Bar a couple of years back. They said - Who is Joni Mitchell?
