No real surprise TBH, the general driving standards out there are really, really poor and i've no reason to believe we wouldn't see similar figures up here...

@IWRATS
Likewise, all too regularly. When it takes them about 3 seconds to go from annoyed shout to rage filled wide eyed ranting, I back off!
When confronted by taxi drivers the first question I always ask is "is that alcohol I can smell on your breath?" its quite alarming how many of them just swear and drive off!

Chap cycling along smoking single skinner tonight at Lothian road
The Air is often pungent on my commute, someone regular drives the route whilst partaking of The Herb, or several of them

THe article's a bit confusing - talking about screening and percentages - this year's campaign caught 1118 drug drivers, last year 1084, year before 1028. Pretty steady. The number of tests they actually do has reduced, so the fail rates increase. Just reflects how certain they are before getting the kit out of the bag.

for me it isn't drink/drug driving thats the problem
the problem is routine flaunting of traffic signals and speed limits
if you are off your tits while driving within legal signals and limits, its likely to be okay, far less concern than a driver who routinely speeds or ignores traffic signals
the unacceptable blur is that, through lack of enforcement, the "otherwise law-abiding" motorist has been encouraged to regard the legal limits as weak guidelines that they can disregard as being unnecessary for a "competent" driver
so the social norm is for ALL drivers to disregard the law, whether they've had X [drug] or not
ie. drug driving is a red herring
what they are really saying is, "we can break the law, but you can't"
there's plenty legally sanctified SSRI drugs such as amitriptylin, gabapentin etc that should also cause concern, but for the widespread hypocrisy surrounding road traffic offenses generally
