I'm musing quite how to phrase this question but in essence "Are there more bikes or bike racks on the road?"

I think* I see many more bike racks atop cars than I do bikes on the road.

    Discuss...

    I think you are correct.

I'd also advance a corollary: cars with empty bike carriers on the roof give less consideration to cyclists on the road than average.

  3. In an attempt to amuse myself on last night's commute I decided to play 'bikes vs racks'. The results might not be entirely accurate as VAR was not available for the tie, and the dark nights make it challenging to spot racks clearly.

For scoring I did count one bike in the distance that did not actually cross paths with me. Also, a couple of cars with racks were parked up on the side of the road - should these count? Anyway on to the scoring...

Leaving Edinburgh and it looked like it would be a high scoring affair, with the racks storming into a 5-0 lead while heading down Queensferry Rd and Maybury. I thought bikes would fight back along the A8 but it turned out the scoring really slowed down. They did land 3 points but another rack at Newbridge left it 6-3 at half-time.

Neither side seemed interested in scoring any more until Uphall Station saw the 2 parked racks. Another one moving through Livingston put the tie seemingly beyond reach. The bikes did not lie down though and one spot crossing the road was followed by a ninja pavement rider sneaking in a score right at the death.

Final score: 9-5 to the racks!

(although if parked cars are discounted it makes it a closer 7-5)
