Was strolling down to the shops on Christmas Eve when a cyclist emerged from a wee lane.

'Allo' says I. This is not right. Adolescents don't ride oversize hybrids with gigantic gel comfort saddles round our way. Further down the road the youth expertly hops off the bike without breaking stride or looking around and continues on foot. The bike lies in the road.

I continue to the shops, intrigued. On the way back I collect the bike and wheel it home. Front puncture, otherwise a 58cm Ridgeback Speed in decent condition. Someone's £400 commuter.

Checked the serial number on the stolen bike sites. No joy. Called 101 and the cops came and got it at 10pm. I hope the owner gets it back.
