I agree but also think that Central Park is the only safe place in New York to cycle. The roads are absolutely chock-a-block with fast moving vehicles: I wouldn't feel at all safe riding there.

The one thing cars do observe in NY is the right turn where pedestrians get right of way and cars will stop for you. Not like the UK where just last week, I got a Vickers from a "white van man" and a mouthful of abuse for daring to be on the road just as the d**khead was coming round the corner at speed. I thought that the law in this country too gave pedestrians right of way in these situations?

But then again, "white van man" probably hasn't read the Highway code and probably can't read anyway! Rant over!

    Merry Christmas to you all!

Highway code rule 170. I thought it was a lower number but they revised the code and added stupid stuff a few years ago.

    Take extra care at junctions.

    You should
watch out for cyclists, motorcyclists, powered wheelchairs/mobility scooters and pedestrians as they are not always easy to see. Be aware that they may not have seen or heard you if you are approaching from behind

watch out for pedestrians crossing a road into which you are turning. If they have started to cross they have priority, so give way

watch out for long vehicles which may be turning at a junction ahead; they may have to use the whole width of the road to make the turn (see Rule 221)
