Evaporating traffic

    Not sure how scientific a few Google maps traffic images really are, but it’s good to see examples of the corollary of induces demand. A shame it’s only temporary.

    In a few weeks, much of this capacity will be replaced by a new 3 billion dollar highway tunnel under downtown Seattle, but until then, the city will have to simply do without a big chunk of the highway system

    Perhaps they needn’t have spent all that?

    At least Seattle also built a transit tunnel a few (ten or so?) years back. Loads of whinging as it was going in about how it wouldn't work, but it seemed pretty good after it was up and running. Essentially you head down to a big underground station under downtown, only it's got buses AND light rail routed through it.
