    1) Legalise all drugs and treat those addicted to them as being ill.

I’m genuinely shocked by that, Cramond foreshore is a busy place where a lot of people, families etc like to go.. not exactly a shady alley to be mugged in!

Violent and acquisitive crime is dropping in Scotland. I find the leaded petrol argument highly persuasive, along with my own theory that smartphones have knocked the gumption out of our youth. Sapped their vital juices.

Nah the leaded petrol argument is like well flawed.

So in 1937/1960 (researchers build in a 23 year time lag between lead in the babies and the crime) lead rates from gasoline(studies tend to be American) and crime rates can be adjusted statistically to produce a graph such that the rates are roughly the same. (Crime rate recording a bit flaky in first third of last century [i will ignore lead paint])

Then there is a boom in motor manufacturing and lead in the atmosphere from the gas. With a parallel boom in crime [with the 23 year lag remember)

Up until lead is removed from the gas. So by 1988 the lead is gone but in 2011 the crime rate although dropping is no where near the lower 1960 level.

So despite the strong correlation [less strong after lead is removed from gas) the explanation is less straightforward than lead. Even if George monbiot has spotted the link.

However Wallpaper did kill you in Victorian Britain. True.

The temporal and spatial correlations looked good and the behavioural aspects of chronic saturnism are well established, initially by Needleman in the 70s.

What are the flaws you detect? I'd be amazed if removing a known neurotoxin from children's environments didn't alter development and behaviour.

i don't buy the lead asbestos neurotoxin hypothesis

cops are just getting better at their stats game

Didn’t Jim Phetus have a song Asbestos lead asbestos back in the day.

The correlation is strong but not causal

@14Westfield - I'm astonished too. The place is usually hoaching with folk. I'd be less surprised it was on the NEPN. Awful story.

The spot down at the causeway to Crammond can become a little desolate and remote. But i would not have considered a mugging there. I hope the police can get a result on this. Shocking for these cyclists for sure.

    Asbestos lead asbestos

There's an advert on STV player for toothpaste with 'two elements found in nature: zinc and arginine' and if I ever find the copy writer they will know the sting of the lash.

That is shocking. This spot is often within 20 yards of an ice cream van and people often sit on benches. Rare to find it deserted so normally would be witnesses.
I got email from someone on holiday subject to having bike stolen.
This time in Bruntsfield. Bolt cutters used in a bike carrier. Left for less than an hour.

I think the ravens will wait for the gamier meat of the older gentleman. This is a child by most measures - we must believe that there's hope for them.

The instigator of the robbery - well, the corbies will sit on his white hause-bane and pike oot his bonny blue een.
