“Vienna’s euro-a-day public transport model could waltz into Berlin“

In Prague it’s apparently 35p a day if you buy an annual pass.

    Lots of trams too!

No idea of the ‘economics’ or taxes on cars/fuel but the price of PT and the importance of it are generally political decisions.

UK (and Scotland) stuck with ‘car as personal freedom, therefore need more roads’ mentality.

Maybe Mayor Boris will remember things could be done differently...

Cheapest Lothian bus annual pass is £665? Can also be direct debit £53 (one off fee then monthly) and described as the best value

Bit under £2 a day. Twice what I used to pay when I had one but that was like 20 years ago.

Still good value but dear compared to Berlin. Or Prague.

Not sure reducing the price would look good economically for LB. Might get more passengers but less revenue??

Not sure what per cent of their revenue comes from advance sales or on the bus?

    Is contactless in yet?

My belief (unsubstantiated) is that much of the Edinburgh based travelling population is On The Buses. And on the flip a lot of the single occupant vehicles on my commute have come in from West Lothian.

    See also Fife, Borders etc

The LB takeover of the wider lothians and borders may encourage more people from their cars on to public transport.?

So if the political will was there, ban the cars and make the public transport cheaper as a solution. People would have to get off the internet, go to bed earlier, get up earlier, wrangle their sprigs earlier then commute by public transport. Hard to nudge people to change like this?

"People would have to get off the internet"

But then they can make up for it by going on the internet on the bus or train in the morning? As opposed to hunching over the steering wheel in a tailback listening to Drivetime radio...

If bus lanes were extended and enforced by letter of fire and sword then car commuting would be the time-waster.

If cycling to school was safe the sprogs could wrangle themselves from age eight I am referring to my own childhood there times have changed I know.

Private motoring gets massive hidden subsidies - expose these and direct them into buses with space and good suspension.

All hail the Dictator Benign of Caledon.

“Hard to nudge people to change like this?”

    Depends.

Also depends when you give up nudging, and say ‘look, nudging didn’t work now change or pay’ (eg Congestion Charging).

BUT, not forgetting that Edinburgh has always had above average bus use.

Travellers (particularly commuters) from out of town have their decisions ‘dictated’ by political decisions (or lack of) - particularly investment in road and rail.

Plus land use policies that influence house prices.

"sprogs could wrangle themselves from age eight "

My two have both been walking themselves to school since that age, eldest was doing it from seven years old. Okay the primary school is not very far away, but that's part of a choice to live near the city's facilities rather than get a cheaper. bigger house out in the suburbs or semi-rural hinterland. Come high school eldest child continued to walk to school even though it was nearly three miles away. Now cycles after figuring out a safe-ish route.

Seems to me that kids do largely what parents do. If principle carers walk, cycle and use public transport then so will kids. If on the other hand key adults drive everywhere, kids will expect a domestic taxi service.

Currently on Île de Ré where it costs 16euros to drive across the bridge, but once you are here it is 1euro for all the buses. Cars & car parking is fairly limited with bikes a plenty...

Could Edinburgh do something similar with a hefty charge to enter the bypass and then cheap buses inside.

I suppose it doesn't help that Forth bridge tolls were abolished by the SNP in one of their populist sops to motorists.

And a day ticket up to £4.50 - although the "Tap, tap, go" cap will be 10p less I believe.

(Makes no odds to me as I will have my National Entitlement Card by the time the fares go up.)

I have a feeling that I read somewhere that public transport is entirely free to use in Luxembourg. (Or is that something else that happens as you get older: you can't remember stuff, apart from stuff that's not actually true?)

i was in luxembourg not too long ago.
indeed i think for residents , not sure it was in a certain zone it seemed free as people came and went without swiping or passes shown.

we got the bus from the outskirts of luxembourg country to go to the city and it was cheap as chips, air conned, free wifi and clean and lots of seats.
as we got closer to the city people got on and off as they pleased.

oh i think it also ran on biodiesel

you could also cycle into the city if you wanted (they are doing a massive electric tram installation at the moment) using rentals or pretty much up and down any river in the conutry on segregated cycle lanes ...

    lovely.
