Change of office means I am exploring new commuting routes. Heading for South Gyle from Cannonmills, is the route alongside the Water of Leith passable on a road bike. I know the bit from Stockbridge to the Dean village is metalled but I have memories of walking through a quagmire from Dean Village to Murrayfield.

    Other route suggestions welcome?

I normally just go around the NEPN, then Russell Road to Roseburn Park. You can also go via Inverleith Park->Craigleith Hill Ave->NEPN. It's a bit shorter if you don't mind the roads.

I have been travelling (in hope) from Band practice on Wednesday evening up st bernards well route to High cobbles through Dean Village and then backroads to Roseburn then round Murrayfield and tram path west

So the bit of Dean Village I have been using is Ok

I used to do the stretch at Gallery of Modern Art - never a Quagmire as such but could be underwater. the surface is concrete.

Detour due to landslides in sections west of Dean Village though

The Dean Village -Belford section also now has a fallen tree blocking the path unless someone has managed to remove it. Frankly the Belford-Roseburn section is one of those paths which you are supposed to be able to cycle but personally I never would. Much too narrow in a lot of places with several blind corners. Anywhere which means pedestrians have to step off the path to let you by is not really cycle commuting territory for me.

Thanks all, I think the Craigleith Hill to Roseburn Path then chase the trams from Balgreen will be the optimum.

PS Walked through the Dean Village the other day and up Hawthornbank Lane, what's the gradient on that steep bit, felt punishing just walking up!

I travel from Stockbridge to heriot watt and have explored different options. Usually when I'm going out I join the NEPN at south Scotland street and then all the way round to roseburn park from where I take the quiet route 8.

I tried the water of leith path, never again. Some sections were really muddy, the diversion due to the landslide is confusing and it is very narrow in places. Also a very steep hill to tackle around dean's village. Took me much longer than just going around the NEPN. Usually when i'm heading back from university, I take the Craigleith Hill-Inverleith park route (quiet route 20). Most of this is downhill so it's easy to keep up with traffic and the roads are quiet anyway.
