    This is why "20 mph zones cause more pollution" is a fallacy.
    While it's true that a car will be more efficient at a steady speed of 30mph in 4th than at 20mph in 2nd/3rd this is largely offset by the decrease in acceleration/braking. Also in town cars typically spend as much time stationary as they do moving so the effect on journey times is minimal in my experience.
