He's written several well-received books about France from a base in Oxfordshire. It was mentioned in passing that he did all his research by bicycle.
A few years ago he moved to the border - literally a house on the border, although apparently in North Cumbria. And wrote a book about the western border region: the Debateable Land.
In this one he talks quite a lot about his bicycle, and getting round by bike and the local bus.
I'm still reading it (actually listening to it), but very much enjoying.
