The horror that progressive politics of the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s had a Year Zero attitude towards anything related to the past, especially Victorian, with the desire to raze it down for something fast and glossy on Futurist lines. People who spoke up against it were dinosaurs and retired colonels.
Edinburgh was saved by the skin of its teeth from bringing the M8 into the city centre.
