The owner once took a whole rhubarb pie and I only wanted a quarter. She said you want it warmed up with cream. I said yes please. She was being sarky. I then sold the other three quarters and another whole pie on the warmed up and with cream ticket. The tea room should work if it ever opens

I brought back home one of those big rhubarb pies and we were enjoying it warmed up with cream over the few following nights. I had to pay for the warming up and the cream mind.

I have signed up for the The Twilight Zone 300 this Saturday. Anyone else?
I know @edinburgh87 has already done it the other week.

I am on the 2nd version of it in October. They should've called that one the Pitch Black Zone

Not me this time. Otherwise engaged (and taking a year off that particular route).

Enjoy @Bill - hope you get a SE wind on the return. Anyone on here entered the LDTTOtS on 10th Oct?

Not sure yet edinburgh87. I may ece the shorter ride or do neither. Again a break from this road would be nice.

I am doing the Etal-u-can (love that route) and may also do the November ride (not sure whether short or long yet).
    If rules allow, that is.

Thanks @edinburgh87. I hope Eskdalemuir will be serving apple pies in the morning. I also now remember all the silly climbs involved. Not really looking forward to that.

@amir I did Etal-you-can last year. Almost all I can remember from that is that we never stayed on one road for more than a few minutes. Surely it wasn't that bad but it felt like that to me.

@bill: one of the pleasures of Etal-U-Can is the vague but incomplete sense of recognition you get going around the course the second or subsequent time. It has the lowest deja vu factor of any Scottish audax

@bill/amir - unfortunately I got no sneak peak of the menu on the route-check as the hub was still closed so we went straight to Langholm. I did miss my beans on toast! I'm envious of you all tomorrow (despite the horrible start time) - I can't enter anything tomorrow (DIY or otherwise) due to the rules around helpers' rides and completing two rides on the 'same' day. Every day's a school day!

I might do a DIY next weekend. I fancy going up to the end of the road in the Ettrick valley if the weather and legs are in shape.

Twilight Zone 300 was the first organised event from Gala this year. Arrangements are a bit different: reduced entries, start at a car park and staggered starts, so you don't get to see the other people much. 'Luckily' this is a return route, so you will eventually get to see people ahead and behind you.

I was having second thoughts when I saw tree branches being blown around during my drive down. However it turned out that the wind wasn't too bad and we got a mix of head- and tailwind on the way down to Alston and back.

No apple pie at Eskdalemuir but I got my bacon and egg roll.
It got very warm down in England -- 18oC apparently.
It started spitting with rain once back in Scotland and continued raining more or less all the way back. It wasn't pouring with rain and we got tailwind at that stage, so it wasn't too bad. For the final 40km I had a company for the first time that day and it definitely took the edge off the dark, cold and wet feeling.

Once in Gala I headed to Maccas for some warm beverages and hot chips.

    Really great day out.

You appear to be at least hinting at the possibility of cold chips. Just how mad are Audaxers?

@IWARTS the truth is that my first large serving of chips was warm, the second one not so much but it was already 11pm, so I couldn't be too picky.

I love the way that 300s now appear utterly routine for @bill.

Fair play to you. What will be next?

@paddyirish lol! don't get me wrong, I sill get tired and I am happy when it's done.

I had a bit of a wild idea about Tour de Tasmanie but after reading more carefully I realised I wouldn't even qualify unless I did a 600k organised/permanent ride before Feb 2021. Also Mr Bill assures me that Tassie has got much worse weather than we have here. Possible rain for 4 weeks straight, wild winds and possible snow in February, he says.

Then there is LEL. Mr Bill actually was showing me the LEL film on Prime on Sunday. It's funny that LEL goes along the Twilight Zone route as well. But I don't know if the timing will work for me.

Twilight Zone Part 2 300 yesterday. Oh my. An Ark would have been a more appropriate mode of conveyance...

Oh wow - well done @Murun B for doing a long ride in that. 300km in continuous heavy rain is really grim. When shoes start to fill with water it starts being Type 3 Fun. I was out yesterday for two hours playing in the puddles on the 'gravel' bike. I had Type 1 Fun, but it did prompt me to remember this ride from the same time last year.

@Murun Well done. Really well done. The way back must have been pretty grim with no dry/warm stop at Eskdalemuir.

@bill yes, we much missed the Eskdalemuir hub & its welcoming approach to drookit cyclists. Spent most of the stops skulking outside Co-ops & filling stations. McDonalds in Gala stopped takeaway service at 10pm due to govt regs so to get my final receipt, one of the very helpful staff made sure my bike atop car fitted under the drivethru height barrier as no way was I taking it off again. Fries watch - lukewarm.

@greenroofer - wore winter boots which I had no expectation of remaining waterproof given the conditions, but thought they might hold out for slightly than the hour or so they did before I was squelching. Still, warm wet feet are infinitely preferable to cold wet feet.

Chap I paired up with on the road did it in bib shorts, overshoes & 34x25 gearing. Also let me share his lumens after my spare light turned out to be akin to bringing a peashooter to a gunfight. Chapeau.

@Murun, your ride was one of the most impressive things I have seen on Strava. I imagine the decision not to push on for 200 miles was an easy one and shows just how rotten the conditions were.

Thanks for the kind words. @acsimpson while I knew how close to an imperial 200 I was, about 99% of my brain space was occupied with the need for (a) dry clothes and (b) hot food, so it wasn't a difficult decision.

@Murun did you have any second thoughts before the ride? Just wondering what sort of mentalist you are!
