New “walk-through” coronavirus testing centres will help in the battle against the pandemic, the health secretary, Matt Hancock, has insisted after sustained opposition criticism of the government’s stance.

Hancock said that six new testing centres would be available in England offering appointments to people without cars.

How have the EEN managed to create a website that subverts the function of the browser back button?

Now it seems when you click on their article, then the back button, instead of taking you back to CCE, it takes you back to a new article (presumably to drive up click revenue)

    Desperate.

The big boy ran away -

Downing Street says local authorities should manage numbers on beaches

Responding to the major incident declared on the south coast yesterday, Downing Street said it was the responsibility of local authorities to manage numbers on beaches and people should not “undo the hard work of the British public”.

A spokesman told a Westminster briefing:

FYI those of us having had suspected corona - I'm hearing that there is potential for short/medium/long term blood pressure issues during and after recovery because of the ACE2 link. Didn't someone say it was a mild flu? Anyway keep an eye on your BP and get it checked if there are any concerns

Congestion is likely to soar, many fear, with all its attendant costs, not least air pollution, whose serious health consequences rival – and appear to exacerbate – those of Covid-19.

“This is a huge opportunity to get more people walking and cycling – but if traffic levels increase at the rate they are, then all those people getting on their bikes are going to jump off them again because they don’t feel safe.”

...as some of us have been saying for months.

Some suggestion Sofa.com in Marchmont might have been open today (website for Edinburgh) though I doubted it.

Not only closed, all furniture gone, all fixtures ripped from the walls

Mike Ashton has bought the chain.

Ministers were warned by senior policing figures on the eve of chaotic scenes at beaches last week that lifting the lockdown is “madness” and risks prompting fresh disorder.

During a meeting last Wednesday with police and crime commissioners, the Home Office minister Kit Malthouse was told that the decision to reopen pubs on 4 July could lead to increased violence and that coastal resorts could be overrun.

According to the West Midlands police and crime commissioner, Labour’s David Jamieson, Malthouse “brushed the concerns away”. Jamieson said: “The issue was raised and it is total madness, we all know it’s madness. Some of his [Malthouse’s] Conservative colleagues raised it as well, particularly those on the coast.”

    Leicester lockdown extended

Hancock has begun making his statement in the House of Commons., and has confirmed the lockdown in Leicester will be extended.

When many cases are found in one setting, such as a hospital or care home, the government has the statutory powers to close down a particular locality, he says.

Leicester has an infection rate of 135 per 100,000 people, which is three times higher than the next highest local area, he says.

Hospital admissions are between 6 and ten a day, he says, which is also higher than in other places.

Schools in Leicester will have to close on Thursday, except for keyworker children, and those shielding will continue to do so beyond 6 July.

Everyone with symptoms in Leicester needs to come forward, Hancock says, and extra funding will be made available to increase testing.

Britain has a once in a generation chance to transform racial inequality through a public inquiry into the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Lord Woolley, the chair of the government’s race disparity unit’s advisory group.

Calling for a full statutory inquiry which Downing Street is so far resisting, Woolley said the pandemic has “laid bare those elements in our society that are deeply racialised”, citing the number of black, Asian and minority ethnic health and care workers who have died, the exposure to the virus of zero-hours worker who are more likely to be from ethnic minorities and housing conditions which have enabled the spread of Covid-19.

Cycling along George Street and Princes Street in last week’s depressing, grey, hazy drizzle felt like the end of days; the shops and bars shuttered as they had been for the previous 13 weeks, hardly a soul about and the quiet broken only by the occasional bus and the odd hungry seagull.
