Care homes and members of the public have been instructed by the government to immediately stop using coronavirus testing kits produced by a healthcare firm after safety problems were discovered.

Randox was awarded a £133m contract in March to produce the testing kits for England, Wales and Northern Ireland without any other firms being given the opportunity to bid for the work.

Turns out that the £800 million claimed to be allocated to ScotGov is only around £21 million (plus stamp duty consequential of maybe £100 million). IFS has confirmed Finance Minister, Kate Forbes calculation.
Not reported in state media. Maybe mentioned in Guardian? In an ideal Tory media world this would stay hidden.
It's only our money of course and Riki can electronically print huge amounts to add to our collective four nation debt.

Why all this fuss about Russians, Chinese, whoever, trying to "steal medical secrets". Aren't we supposed to be all working together to find a solution? We should be sharing data and ideas, not hiding them.

I expect the systems in question were just hacked anyway by shifty types (in this case Russian) who break into all sorts of systems to see what interesting information they can collect and then sell. Sometimes they will sell to the Russian state, sometimes to other people. Having people like this around suits the interests of all sorts of states, including our own (e.g. https://www.accountingweb.co.uk/tax/business-tax/hmrc-buy-stolen-information-from-convicted-fraudster)

Then the PR team of our glorious organs of state security decide that "Evil Russian haxx0rs interfere with vaccine research" is actually quite a good story. And here we are.

@Colonies_Chris The version I read noted that the research data was intact, which would be the biggest worry. I assume other concerns would be the theft of the data for monetisation and/or improper implementation, which could potentially banjo the potential of this particular thread.

Agreed, there seems to be no suggestion that data has been damaged, just viewed. You can only monetise stolen data if it's secret. If the originator is prepared to give it away freely - as they should - then no-one will pay for it. This has the hallmarks of government and media whipping up hysteria against the enemy du jour.

Symptoms of Covid-19 appear to fall into six different groupings, researchers have revealed, in work they say could help to predict whether a patient will end up needing a ventilator or other breathing support.

The team say the findings could give healthcare providers several days advanced warning of demand for hospital care and respiratory support.

How will lockdown affect this prognosis?

After this virus, I suspect quite a hefty change will be discernible. I think people will discover all sorts of things they can do that they didn’t do before. Maybe they’ll realise it is not such a good idea to get fat; that much of the suffering they get in middle age and later life is caused by just eating too much of the wrong sort of food. I always find it fascinating how the statistics illustrate that the health of the nation was enormously better at the end of the second world war than it was at the beginning.

Obesity and link to diabetes (late on set type) and heart disease. Used to be the big challenge for NHS.

The same solution (electric bikes/ bikes) needs to happen.

We were overtaken by three older gents of less than sylph like proportions going up the granites yesterday. They said we would catch them on the descent but they turned to Heriot just before we reached them.

The calls come as Boris Johnson prepares to unveil a “war on obesity”, after weight was identified as a major factor in deaths from Covid-19. In England, 64% of adults are overweight or obese and Johnson has said his time in intensive care after contracting the virus – when he weighed more than 17 stone – has changed his “libertarian” views on food and obesity.

Walk today tried to avoid various CV-19 hotspots.

    Mrs LB spotted:

Victoria St still has traffic on it.

Holyrood Car Park rammed with queues of traffic around to Holyrood Rd.

Queen's Drive open for / popular with cyclists and walkers though they meet wall of motorised traffic at roundabout.

Lots of visitors and guided tours restarting.

Cafes and pubs near Picardy Place with people sat back to back at tables without screens (!)

Hoardes of people fenced in trying to cross London Rd - barriers need removed asap.

Market St and Mound open. Kerbs on cycle lane but no wands yet.

People on open top part of city tour buses don't have to wear masks. Public transport exemption apparently. Naturally everyone crams there rather than sit inside with a mask.

Expect a continuing rise in Scottish cases as sunny holiday types breeze about the city believing themselves to be exempt.

From The Guardian daily briefing (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jul/20/monday-briefing-we-must-stop-second-wave-doctors-warn):

'In Scotland, where new cases rose for the fifth consecutive day, there is concern about an outbreak of Covid-19 cases at a call centre in Motherwell that carries out contact tracing for the NHS.'

As in, "Cabinet is going to meet in-person tomorrow, without masks and with members 1m apart" or "Cabinet is meeting tomorrow to discuss the 2m rule and wearing of masks"?

The first - though they might actually sit more than 1m apart.
