Oh, and we have new restrictions to deal with anyway:

@ejstubbs, as I expected, the new Test And Protect app not visible to my Android phone as it runs an older version of Android. Confusingly, there was an NHS 24 Scotland Covid-19 app, I installed that hoping it was the Test And Protect app, but when I double checked, no. This app is only for education about symptoms, where to go for a test, etc. But it works on Android 4.4...

As several have opined already, the app is a bit of a distraction/excuse for not doing old fashioned, labour intensive track and trace, i.e. folk phoning up lists of contacts, checking addresses and knocking on doors, and so on.

I certainly won't be buying a new phone just to run the app...

@unhurt: it is. I’ve been telling people to buy a SAD lamp before they sell out once everyone is stuck indoors in the dark.

Weirdly ScotGOV have taken the decision to not use the native Apple/Google app, but instead use an app which is built by a 3rd party company - the same one who built app for Ireland and Gibraltar, which is based on the Apple/Google app (or actually API).

So we have an app that is usable in Scotland/Ireland/Gibraltar (being sold as an advantage, "common travel area"), but nowhere else in the world.

I can't see anything wrong with the approach they've gone for here.

There isn't an official Google/IOS App for this, just an a API for generating keys and sharing keys over Bluetooth as a proximity test.

The system do3es allow for interoperability between different countries systems but it sounds like this isn't implemented yet.

They have used something open source that was working, modified it and released it very quickly. By keeping limitation the app to a single purpose they have maximised privacy.

The way I see it is that enough people use it, and it works then it may well save lives. If it doesn't work then nothing is lost.

App small-print says "We are working towards a solution to securely share 'diagnosis keys' with other countries - so that you will soon be able to use this app when visiting other countries. This will also allow apps used by visitors from those countries to work here."

Good news about compatibility with other countries, hope this happens soon.

Shame though, as with everything else Covid related there seems to have been no joined up thinking internationally (except on data sharing) on a shared approach to managing such things, instead each country is scrambling to do its own thing.

Welsh Health and Social Services Minister Vaughan Gething said launching a joint app with England was "the most practical option".

He added that the move reflects "movement across our shared border".

"It makes sense to use the same app, working in exactly the same way, regardless of which country you're in."

@gembo Didn't see your running women but I did see 100+ soldiers being forced to run up Castlelaw this morning as I came off Harbour Hill. Some limited social distancing (due to the weaker specimens being dropped off the back while being shouted at) and an awful lot of wheezing.

No packs or weapons. Brenda's enemies must quake in fear.
To give them space I ran up Allermuir/Caerketton first and did Castlelaw later.

By the time I got up Castlelaw the only remaining squaddie was a rather splendid tall Sikh chap trotting down the hill and looking thoroughly amused by the morning's operations...

The boss of Heathrow airport has warned that its west London home of Hounslow risks becoming like “a mining town in the 1980s” with the collapse in air traffic putting tens of thousands of jobs at risk.

    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/sep/11/airport-boss-says-heathrow-area-risks-becoming-1980s-mining-town

    Quite possibly.

Will there be more governmental care/action this time??

Not to worry, they'll all get great new jobs building all-electric airliners.

It's true, Boris said it will happen. Just believe harder and everything will be fine. Really.

    http://airqualitynews.com/2020/09/15/cutting-air-pollution-could-halve-the-number-of-children-with-poor-lung-function/

Reducing air pollution around schools could halve the number of children suffering from lung function so poor it affects their everyday lives, according to research conducted by Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).

According to the research, a reduction in air pollution during the lockdown period saw asthma attacks in children almost disappear.

Snake used as face mask on bus
"Using a face covering on public transport is mandatory, except for children under the age of 11 or those who are exempt for health or disability reasons.
A Transport for Greater Manchester spokesperson said: "Government guidance clearly states that this needn't be a surgical mask, and that passengers can make their own or wear something suitable, such as a scarf or bandana.
"While there is a small degree of interpretation that can be applied to this, we do not believe it extends to the use of snakeskin - especially when still attached to the snake.""

dumb all over, a little ugly on the side

.. as Frank Zappa immortally quipped.

So we've already had Noel Gallacher and Ian Brown make tits of themselves recently along similar lines

I have to ask myself - how much of this blather is cynically appealing to the low prejudice of their respective fanbases.. or merely their own cognitive dissonance due to missing out on lucrative touring revenues..

or are they just dumb enough to believe that wearing a mask is primarily to protect yourself from others rather than protecting everyone else from you

    idiots

@bax brother, who can possibly know? But as I will always point out, one of your theories is actually the resolution of george Ivan’s cognitive dissonance. Though van the man is someone with a lot of cognitive dissonance to resolve.

One of my Nicholas’s just had a reasonable day. He won’t be my lowest scorer now.

    > cognitive dissonance due to missing out on lucrative touring revenues..

I think you probably have to be a pretty unpleasant, or at least stubborn and a bit myopic to take these views.

But you're probably hit on something there - we're all probably a little bit guilty of taking a "carefully considered" view on the Covid crisis which aligns at least a bit with our own self interest.

I've seen very few pub owners coming out to demand a new lockdown, while your childless unsociable office worker who's doing quite nicely out of WFH is probably a bit more open to the idea...

not bothered about closing pubs etc myself, as very few vulnerable people are being forced to enter these places

but shops and public transport -- just wear a mask, get over yourselves pop stars and village idiots, its no big deal

The government is preparing to shore up its £10bn coronavirus test-and-trace programme by drafting in teams of management consultants.

On a tram.for first time since lockdown.

Most people have masks, but seems to be no staff managing distancing. Quiet when we got on, now standing.

    Don't feel comfortable.

Baldcyclist - Social distancing just seems to be forgotten about by most people nowadays. It's no wonder the virus is getting out of control. I sometimes feel I'm the only one that tries to social distance these days.

Social distancing, masks, hand washing - most people seem to have abandoned all three. I'm part of a minority observing the rules on the street, and in shops. I can understand that folk want a break and to relax, but now is really not the time.
