Number 3 son was sent home from school nearly two weeks ago because someone in one of his classes tested positive. He had to stay in his bedroom.

The rest of us faced no changes.

This has changed, one of the other schools in NLC sent this tweet which says that, had he been told to self isolate now, the rest of us would have had to too.

This is going to cause a lot of disruption in schools and elsewhere.

Citation required? A symptomatic person results in the entire household isolating, but I can't find guidance that suggests that an asymptotic contact being asked to isolate results in a household isolation...

The Uni line is that they won't ask anyone to isolate, it will be an NHS request.

So the school letter may be going beyond the guidelines?

Only the contacts of the child in the classroom being asked to isolate currently in Edinburgh. Not the whole class SORT guidelines, subject to change of course as this is looser than previously and way looser than NLC

“So the school letter may be going beyond the guidelines?“

But are the (SG?) guidelines ’the law’ and enforceable (in theory - forget reality)?

More important, is the school (and other orgs/employers) ‘allowed’ to set different/higher standards?

I believe this is the law:

The Health Protection (Coronavirus) (Restrictions) (Scotland) Regulations 2020

This doesn't include quarantine. Legal requirements to self isolate are being brought in later in the month (but I don't know if that's just England and Wales).

I suspect that there's nothing inherently illegal about going beyond the law (and regulations or guidelines - regulations are law, guidelines are non-exclusive suggestions on how to meet the law, but are guaranteed to meet the law/regulations), unless one contravenes another.

For example, preventing a person with a disability from accessing a service on the grounds that "it wouldn't be safe" might exceed the H&S regulations yet breach discrimination laws. Or putting up a homemade sign saying "danger, do not enter" on a field of grass might exceed H&S regulations (although use of certain signs are proscribed), but breach access laws.

Generally if you don't meet the guidelines, you may have to defend yourself if an issue arises, but if you meet the guidelines, you'll have a ready made defence. Many folk take the "better safe than sorry" approach and add a bit extra to the guidelines. How many of us have an Enhanced Disclosure, designed for the prospective adoptions, when we're only in contact with children in a weekly, group activity setting...

So the school letter appears to reflect the current guidance in North and South Lanarkshire, Glasgow City, East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire, East Dunbartonshire and West Dunbartonshire. Quite a change if so. As others have said, probably not legally enforceable, and probably not well thought out (access to shopping deliveries etc)

Ah, OK, part of the local lockdown.

Quarantine has been shown to have better compliance without being compelled, hence not having regulations requiring it (until shortly in England).

As school classes are likely to be close contact, that will take out the entire class, the teacher and all their households.

Extrapolating a bit, schools might still be "open", but with everyone self isolating!

    “designed for the prospective adoptions”

    Didn’t know that!

An enhanced disclosure is a type of disclosure used to help employers make sure their employees or volunteers, are suitable for certain types of work.

You may need an enhanced disclosure if you apply:

    to adopt a child

for a gaming or lottery licence for your business

Was expected to have one when I was involved in a project involving “vulnerable children”

This was in case I was ever alone with them.

    Understandably

Except that I realised they were vulnerable to wandering off...

I decided I didn’t want to be left alone by the ‘minders’!

Interesting strategy to take the politicians out of the UK update. Is this an attempt to reinstate trust?

The scientist-bureaucrats appearing without the politicians looks pretty bad to me.

Suggests someone is now afraid of being hung out to dry.

There's no beating this thing without teamwork and solidarity.

This is probably the important bit -

As evidence accumulates for airborne transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, measures which would help control the virus while also promoting economic recovery include mandating face coverings in crowded indoor spaces, improving ventilation (especially of schools and workplaces), continuing to require social distancing, and continuing to discourage large indoor gatherings, especially when vocalisation is involved. With measures like these, much of society will be able to function effectively while keeping the risk of transmission relatively low

I see 5 or 30 mile lockdown radiuses are on the agenda for ScotGov.

Have suggested Mrs B go and see her parents tommorow. May be sometime before she will be able to again.

Though that said, it might not be advisable. We did the most reckless thing we have done since lockdown 1.0 (aside from the once we went for a meal) and went into Edinburgh at the weekend. Was lots of people on the tram, and on the mile. Have the strees of waiting till beyond the weekend to see if I've killed myself or not.

@Roibeard just FYI the legislation you linked to has now been replaced by The Health Protection (Coronavirus) (Restrictions and Requirements) (Scotland) Regulations 2020:

Still no mention of quarantine or self isolation, though that could be in one of the Coronavirus Acts.

    Rule 2.

We’ve got a weekend booked in Ayr next month. That’s 60 km.

@gembo - you clearly haven't been following this, in summary:

You should work at home, unless you can't. The rule of six applies everywhere, except:

    1. work, where you can meet hunners of folk; or
    2. inside your home where no non residents are allowed, unless you are part of a non-cohabiting couple. They can get it on indoors (and presumably outdoors - although the guidance is silent here).

Children under 12 don't count. Teenagers can meet in groups of up to six outside, unless they are at school - then they can meet in groups of up to 30 inside. Finally, just remember that you need to wear a mask in a pub toilet but not when you are sat in the bar.

This has been a public service announcement.

Does that mean I can punt the kids into my mum's house and run without having to visit?

“Does that mean I can punt the kids into my mum's house and run without having to visit?“

    Explicitly yes -

NS: "There will be exceptions for those living alone, or alone with children, who form extended households; for couples in non-cohabiting relationships; for the provision of informal childcare by, for example, grandparents; and for tradespeople."

@steveo - I think it would be your duty as a law abiding citizen to leg it and, just to be safe, douse your insides with suitable alcohol as soon as you got home.
