I'd be most worried about a situation where they want to come home but are not allowed to due to travel/bubble restrictions. I suppose most 17/18 yr olds wld rather tough it out w/ their new pals, realistically, once they're aboard, rather than do term one remotely from childhood bedroom. What a time.

@arellcat - typical Swedish business - not enforcing masks ;-) We were in Akva after the shop - that was being managed ok. Basic menu and spaced well indoors.

@nobrakes - that's a big step for him, hoping it goes well and he keeps focused on studies but also enjoys this time despite the situation. Sure he will.

@gkgk - agreed. Think most here would wish them all a good start to living away.

Now I appreciate even more your restraint on the High Street in Dunfermline

he's got a couple of new dittys last sunday as well

"just obey" is one that seems to go down really well with the simpletons

funny how all the vanilla covid sceptics are suddenly rebels and anti-conformists, where were they before now ?

anyway yes - the wife has the same ongoing heart rate issues as you.. she's regularly up over 100.. hard to get it under control, isn't it.

the NHS treats everyone as a 'unique' case.. this could and should be a positive thing.. but when it comes to this virus, it only serves to frustrate and atomise sufferers.. these post-viral conditions are clearly widespread, but you can be left thinking you are the anomaly.. its rare for an NHS professional to admit that you are not the only one..

An official announcement from the local authority said it had become clear that “the best place to experience Edinburgh’s Christmas and Hogmanay will be from home.”

"Covid-positive MP Margaret Ferrier suspended over Parliament visit"

"Ms Ferrier was one of the MPs who called on the prime minister's advisor Dominic Cummings to resign in the wake of the controversy over his visit to the north east of England during lockdown.

At the time, she said his actions had "undermined the sacrifices that we have all been making" and described his position as "untenable"."

I actually saw a "if Scotland was independent this wouldn't have happened" comment on twitter.

Little bit ironic though that an SNP MP would make the case so eloquently for an all UK track and trace app.

    @Ed1 been taking multi-vit tablet

@Rosie @MB Some nationalists make stupid statements (British or Scottish). The anti lockdown and vax brigade see people waving Union flags, saltires, St George's Crosses with 'Nazi' comments about the FM and PM. Some strange alliances out there.

Ferrier has at least provided some light relief as SNP blunder got Tom Bradby smiling on News at 10. Then they highlighted Jeremy Corbyn and Johnston senior breaching rules too.
Of course the MSP got her results too soon! If they had gone to a lab in NHS England area she would have got a day later (joke).
'Utterly indefensible' says FM - could be fine and a bye, bye election!

@Murun: let he who hasn’t used a quick & dirty temporary solution which becomes a critical part of core operations cast the first stone.

Each case was a column so limit of 16384. If the intern had used rows, they'd be golden, at least til we hit 1 million cases per day.

I’ve seen other reports that this wasn’t actually a problem with Excel* but with the file transfer system itself and that the “solution” that has been used was to split the files before upload.

*other than using Excel as a database...

Microsoft’s spreadsheet software is one of the world’s most popular business tools, but it is regularly implicated in errors which can be costly, or even dangerous, because of the ease with which it can be used in situations it was not designed for.

In 2013, an Excel error at JPMorgan masked the loss of almost $6bn (£4.6bn), after a cell mistakenly divided by the sum of two interest rates, rather than the average. The news led James Kwak, a professor of law at the University of Connecticut, to warn that Excel is “incredibly fragile”.

I shudder when ever I see people using excel for anything other than quick analysis then disposing of the sheet when they're finished.

Whilst a Spreadsheet does have its uses in many industries, I'm aware of at least one highly regulated industry where their usage is very tightly controlled via Risk Assessments, Information Governance, Information Security, Formal Validation and Periodic Review.... and are fully inspectable on all of those criteria along with a justification of their usage over other methods....

Don't forget that the government didn't just use Excel instead of database software for track and trace.

They paid Serco to make a huge profit at the expense of the taxpayer to use Excel for track and trace.

    £12bn and counting.....

I'm not one to gloat, but the gov could have contracted me for £10 and i could have easily done a better job with a proper MySQL implementation. Disgusting that tens of millions go to a contractor, and they use not only an Excel spreadsheet, but they use the ancient XLS format...
