‘Not possible to reason with people panic buying’
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.

Panic buying news update 16/3:
LiDl Easter Road, mid-morning after the ravages of a hysterical panicked mob of shopper over the weekend. Busier than usual for the time of day.
Some toilet roll, bleach. Some pain relief medicines except for paracetamol.
No tinned goods of any variety; no pasta, rice; no porage oats, flour; no peanuts, chocolate or potato crisps; no vitamin supplements.
Hardly any red wine (plenty of white), olive oil, jarred or pickled goods. Some biscuits, crackers, and tortilla chips.
Loads of fresh meat, milk, cheese, eggs, fruit and veg, bread.
I know it's Scotland and folk don't eat much fresh fruit and veg. However it was as though a horde of prepping survivalists had descended and cleared the place of dry and preserved rations for their bunkers.
Hopefully shops will re-stock with these items during the week...

@crowriver Haha! When I came back from Slateford Rd Lidl on Saturday and reported to Mr Bill: barely any dairy, no eggs, no meat, no pasta, no rice, no canned food, no porridge oats*, no flour, barely any frozen food but plenty of fresh fruit and veg he said:
"That's just tells you something about the Scottish diet**, doesn't it?"
*As a result I am eating fancy muesli this week
** EDIT: I meant 'diet'!
@bill 'Scottish die' Freudian slip? How's the fancy muesli?
The Scottish diet as presently constituted is the result of historical and geographical forces.
Pre-historically a lot of fish, seafood, game and hazelnuts. Seasonal berries, all that stuff. Historically oatmeal, dairy and animal fat. Potatoes, rough cabbage and weird stuff like Bishop's weed.
Industrial revolution standardised a lot of stuff. The second world war did away with variety in cheese and beer (only orange Cheddar remained cheese-wise). Little culture of growing at home so little notion of how bad the fruit in shops is.
I have had colleagues genuinely unable to stomach a tomato.
@jdanielp haha! well spotted!
Muesli is nice. Lots of dried fruit in it and rather sweet as a result. I could get used to it.

Never has there been a clearer need to end govt information being fed to preferred outlets, briefings off the record and interviews treated like sweeties not public duty. Media, politics and science are all behaving more responsibly. The info system is broken, but easy to fix.

@crowriver - apparently Boroughmuir has said it "will support parents who choose to keep their children at home".
Having grown my own veg for a while now in Scotland I can confirm that relying largely on tatties, leeks and kale make perfect sense.
“relying largely on tatties, leeks and kale make perfect sense“
Not a balanced diet though...

That's not going to go down well. I'm going to try working from home tomorrow. I'll have to experiment with fitting a cycle into the day at some point, especially if this is to become a regular/ongoing thing, which appears likely soon.

@SRD, that's encouraging. I've written to my son's head teacher, he is off school from today. My daughter is off from tomorrow, will be writing a similar letter to her head teacher.
Biggest risk factor so far of kids at home is excessive screen time. So I set an essay brief for my son, he is writing it just now...
Oh well change of plan then Wfh for the foreseeable. This is not going to go well.
Panic buying evening bulletin 16/3:
Snozberries Abbeyhill a tad less devastated than LiDL Easter Road.
Plenty of red wine (for a price); some tinned veg, jars of pickles and olive oil. Alas similarly desolate shelving where pasta, crisps and flour used to be. Who knew baking bread was so popular?
Snozberries' fresh meat aisles looking rather depopulated too. Didn't bother to check pharmacy section as we have most things.
I can report that it is impossible to find flour anywhere in Abbeyhill/top of Easter Road area, at least today.
Top tip: Scotmid are handy for some stuff, and fairly well stocked. Poundstretchers and B&M sell food and drink items, but not as bargaintastic as supermarchés, with some exceptions.
More news from the front line as it happens...
Well that's one way of getting toilet roll!

If I understand correctly tourist, service and hospitality businesses are all now going to collapse. Because they weren't ordered to close they won't be insured.
Not ordering specific businesses to close seems like utter cowardice on the part of the prime minister.
That seems to be the way it is, but can’t last as a policy if there is any intention to achieve business as usual’ in a few months.
How to pay for it is another matter.
