NS seems to be saying if furlough not extended beyond Dec 2 she'll lock us down now.

You know it's hard not to get rule 2'd off sometimes! My wife's not seen her parents in over a month, nor them their grandson.

But my facebook seems to be full of people taking day trips out of West Lothian, and work people taking day trips into Edinburgh from outwith Lothian despite the restrictions.

I then see comments on FB saying "We're doing everything right we shouldn't get locked down" when talking about the English lockdown, and I dispair.

@Baldcyclist, small beer compared to the queues of folk at Heathrow T5 jetting off for winter sun before lockdown comes in on Thursday being reported in the meedja. I mean, what the actual...?

@Baldycyclist. I'm assuming those aren't actually 2 groups of people. It's the same folk acting as if nothings wrong and complaining about the lockdown.

And some not so good news:

    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/nov/09/covid-set-back-attitudes-to-public-transport-by-two-decades-says-rac

Most Britons see their car as more important now and would not choose greener alternative

    ☹️

To be fair, you can understand that perspective, I wouldn't be full of joy at the prospect of having to get a train every day right now...

See page 1 of this thread way back in March, was always going to happen...

@ejstubbs - that's among existing car owners, so only 65% of people who already own a car think it is essential. It's sad that that figure has risen, but it's still surprisingly low to me. This is a survey of a self selecting group, i.e. people who already think a car is important enough o have bought one.

OK, so how about this one:

    https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/nov/10/people-drive-fly-climate-crisis-global-poll-green-recovery-covid-pandemic

In climate terms, the most alarming finding of the survey was the widespread intention to drive more after the pandemic than before, despite efforts in many countries to create more space in cities for safe and sustainable modes of transport.

This trend was apparent in all 26 countries in the survey and most pronounced in Brazil, where 62% said they would use their car more than before the pandemic, while only 12% said less, and South Africa 60% more and 12%.

In the US and Australia, more than 40% expected to drive more than before, compared with 10% less.

The trend was also apparent but less strong in the UK, Italy, Germany, India and China. While this may be partly because of the difficulties of adequate social spacing on public transport, it means more traffic, more congestion and more emissions.

What proportion car owners regarded their car as essential before the pandemic? Was it more or less than 65%?

My guess is it was higher. As the report by the Royal Automobile Club makes clear:

"50% reported actually using their car less overall this year, with 33% of the 3,000 respondents currently working from home"

As for this stat, it was always something of a red herring. Public transport was never good enough for most drivers, even if they said in response to a survey, that if it was "better" they would use it more. Yeah, right. Take several large sacks of salt with that one.

"only 43% agreed they would use their cars less if there was better public transport, a sharp fall from 57% in 2019, and the lowest figure since 2002."

Or in other words, 14% of car owners surveyed were relieved to finally have an excuse not to say what they thought people wanted to hear, and pretend to give a sh1t about climate change, pollution, etc. Now they don't have to give two hoots and they can justify it on grounds of personal safety. Result!

Fife, Angus and Perth+Kinross will move from Level 2 to Level 3 from Friday

@chdot just read that, I was surprised at how *similar the restrictions actually are in Level 3. I think the only thing that will actually impact us is that the boy will have to do his Judo outside (if they continue to run the club).

*appreciate some retailers/esablishments/people that drink will be impacted more.

The Grauniad report @ejstubbs shared (thanks) is certainly a lot more thorough and worrying than the stuff from the RAC.

It's not good, far from it, but again it's kind of what I expected. Covid has made people much more insular and shunning public transport in favor of their isolated wee box on wheels will be appealing, assuming you have a wee box.

A more interesting statistic would be people who didn't have a car pre-covid buying one. This article in The Atlantic talks about millenials buying 'Covid Cars'.

Fife going to Level 3 will at least put a halt to the "booze train" phenomenon that apparently started when the central belt went to Level 3 and Fife pubs were still open. Looks like Dundonian booze commuters are out of luck too...

Don’t suppose he was alone on the planes.

Apologised because he’s a ‘public figure’?

Why are the planes flying without compulsory isolation at one or both ends?

Morningside absolutely hoaching today, e.g. there was queue of about five family groups waiting to get into Toys Galore.

Also Morningside today - quite a few empty parking places.

    Hmmm...

“queue of about five family groups waiting to get into Toys Galore“

Don’t let facts get in the way of a good prejudice...

Don’t suppose the owner is asking how customers travelled today.

Do doubt he thinks he’s been raising the profile of his shop (and Morningside) by appearing in the press.

    Probably so.

Hope the pavements are wide enough.

Don’t suppose there’s any new bike parking?
