I haven't seen any large bags of rice for weeks but 1kg bags
are still to be found in local stores.
People seem to be a bit fixated on rice and ignoring equally useful options. I was pleased to find that Aldi do big 2kg packets of red lentils...let the dhal olympics begin...

Hospitality industry completely confused as to what to do.

There will be a huge number of folding companies in the next few weeks. Hard enough for most small businesses to outlast a few quiet weeks or for event companies to have one last minute event cancelled. ONly hope for many will be events are postponed and they can keep deposits etc.

Not sure how your average pub/sandwich shop/restaurant is going to cope.

I suspect we'll be told to work from home tomorrow.

Team meeting this morning, staff were genuinely worried we're not doing so already.

@baldycyclist, think so, we will go in then be told to work from home maybe from Wednesday?

Finance sector mostly home. Roads quiet

    We live in unruly times.

Expect those queuing with extra items at supermarkets will say they are buying for a friend or neighbour.

Schools - for younger I would possibly take them out but our daughter loved primary school. Older they would try and meet up.

Over 70s or others self isolating? - many will ignore - doesn't apply to them.

Politicians - expect message fatigue shortly.

Ventilators - sorry asking Dyson to repurpose to these is just flim flam. Need people to work machines.

Money - never organises itself, except on the automated stock market and it pulled the plug on itself on a share selling spree.

Winners - like Brexit they are in the wings waiting to profit and control from collapsed businesses. Like the bank crash, some may actually get state aid to get their planes in the air.

An expert guide to social distancing – and what to do if friends and family aren't onboard

Experts say avoiding close contact is the key to slowing coronavirus – but what if you live with someone who’s throwing caution to the wind?

Emails tonight saying "encouraged but not enforced".

I think that is a legal technicality.

We were asked to work from home "where practical" starting today. They also asked for justification for why anyone is still in the office.

I also think we are going to be told to work from home tomorrow as a suspect case in my office. I did wonder if everyone works from home then could go in to work as normal. We are generally allowed to work from home up to 3 days a week most people do, but cant say I have.

“I did wonder if everyone works from home then I could go in to work as normal“

    Why would you want to?

For the cycle get some fresh air, the morning sun. I probably wont go to work if every one else works from home, I would look negligent, "subversive"; not doing my bit if I continued to go in to work, when can work fine from home.

But you could work from home and do different commute length cycle rides.

Yes, that is true and would avoid the rubbish air and rubbish driving sometimes get in Corstorphine. That is what will do, I will think of a route that avoids town and cycle that in the morning before work from home.

Do we know how the virus travelled in London?

No. Some have suggested that frequent flying of people in a richer borough in London or recent ski holidays to Italy may have increased the incidence in Kensington and Chelsea, but this is speculation.

The UK has stopped testing people who do not need hospitalisation. This has been very controversial as it prevents the behaviour mapping that we have seen in Japan.

The AUK Board has tonight decided to suspend recognition of all calendar, permanent and DIY events, with immediate effect, until further notice.

    That seems a bit harsh.

It’s quite likely that most organised events will be cancelled.

Individuals will still cycle for physical health reasons.

Perhaps more importantly, especially for very keen audaxers, improving/maintaining their mental health.

while experience in China and now South Korea show that suppression is possible in the short term, it remains to be seen whether it is possible long-term, and whether the social and economic costs of the interventions adopted thus far can be reduced

    https://www.imperial.ac.uk/media/imperial-college/medicine/sph/ide/gida-fellowships/Imperial-College-COVID19-NPI-modelling-16-03-2020.pdf

I think the implication is that war-like reorganisation will have to take place in the time bought by the suppression effort this summer. New hospitals quickly bolted together and staffed, basic ventilators produced and so on. 1939 without the travel.

@ARobComp much like the hospitality industry a lot of my friends have now lost their hand-to-mouth existence as gigging jazz musicians - now asking people to buy their online stuff and some even setting up personal crowdfunders because of lost gigs.

Like us, Boris Johnson knew about Coronavirus in Dec/January. He went on holiday for 3 weeks anyway. Expect that’ll be but a footnote in the damning public inquiry that’ll uncover lots of the shocking kind of stuff below.

One aspect of this thing is that they can bail out Richard Branson and there is even less we can do about it than usual. No demonstrations, no elections.
