After years when similar exercises have turned up more wholesome lifestyle trends such as the rise of the plant-based diet, the star performer of 2020 was lager, with sales soaring by more than a fifth, or more than £800m. Supermarkets also rang up an extra £1bn of cigarettes and rolling tobacco at the checkout.

First family Covid argument. Wifes parents are coming for Xmas, from evening of 24th to 26th. I really don't think they should.

We now have to take the boy out of school after today - I'm really not happy about that either - so that we can isolate for a week in advance of them coming. I hope they at least do the same.

I was expecting to have to argue against the parents-in-law trying to visit but they have spontaneously decided it's nowhere near worth the risk with vaccines in sight and so on. It's also technically the turn of the siblings-in-law this year. Also we have no adaptations in the house for people recovering from hip replacements and broken ankles. My own parents are quite happy not taking any risks and keeping themselves isolated from the physical presences and prevailing political views in their own house.

On Tuesday I will still… potentially… be in a building with 1300 possible carriers so we’re not having any visitors on Christmas Day.

If the weather is dry I’ll take a ‘77 Stowaway round the loch in the morning.

I’ll take things to my parents but I’ll just back the car up the driveway and pop open the trunk. Anything there will have been in there for a day or two by then or it will have been wrapped in foil when it came out of the bread machine and was still stinking hot.

It’s possible I might nip into the Indian Orchard for a take away on the return journey.

Having the department night in on Zoom tomorrow.

Friend came round. Not seen him in a while. Thought I was going to shake his hand and invite him in.

No on both counts. Round the back, fire is lit, keen to get their chat but not their viruses no siree.

Me and the Sturge tight on that if nothing else.

“That means people from Scotland not visiting other parts of the UK, and vice versa.

“Cross-border travel for all but the most essential purposes is not permitted.”

The first minister also announced that school children in Scotland will have a phased return to schooling in the New Year.

We didn't have much 'online' schooling between March and June, but one child has since acquired a Teams login.

Sorry, I said order but yes I mean go down to Scotmid and return with the clinking panniers of shame.

Annoyingly I have lost my 2.50 off coupon# that Scotmid persist with instead of the dividend.

After another argument with my wife, who still wanted to have Xmas dinner even if nothing else. It took granny to phone to cancel to knock sense into her.

We'll go over to East Calder now and meet for a walk at Almondale Country Park, then have Xmas dinner in our own houses. Much happier!

“It took granny to phone to cancel to knock sense into her.“

Aye gotta respect the older generation.

Of course older (particularly with Covid) isn’t always ’more vulnerable’

I still have no clear idea whether Covid is spread mostly by people ‘ignoring the rules’ or people forced to stay too close to others (at work or home) or ‘surfaces’ or badly fitting PPE.

I live in a low Covid locality with plenty of outdoors, masked and space queues outside shops, but I’m not complacent. I’m lucky and, to use the word, privileged.

Okay, so I've now been working for nine months in full-time front-line support work in people's own homes with two weeks annual leave. I've seen my mum three times, the last time to stay with her after she got home from hospital after a minor stroke. My three kids are all trying to get through their uni courses, the youngest as a student nurse. No word on when I or my colleagues will get the vaccine. And now we can't see my mum or kids at Christmas. And to be honest it all feels like this is happening because people in this country are too selfish/stupid/libertarian to prevent this from happening. We re-opened our educational centres months ago and using full PPE, social distancing, thorough cleaning etc. we have, so far had no cases among our students. It can be done.

    “It can be done”

With sensible attention to detail, relevant training AND essential equipment.

Well done to you and your colleagues.

I suspect any (justifiable) pride is diluted by anger at so many other things that have occurred over the past year - or not happened that should have.

That's it in a nutshell chdot. Everyone has a part to play. People travelling outside East Lothian are being blamed for our move to tier three here.

Thanks for the comments. I really enjoy my work and it's helped me get through this as I know cycling has helped some.
