Probably not Tier 4 when they arrived, so return journey is “essential”(?)

Tier 4? Do you mean Level 4?
I daresay hotels and AirBnBs have been allowed to take bookings up until Xmas Eve? Or maybe they were not supposed to but did it anyway?
A quick search reveals there are 300+ whole properties available to book as AirBnB accommodation in Edinburgh, checking in today, checkout in the new year. I thought hospitality businesses had to close? (There is a caveat reminder to "check the Cover-19 regulations in your chosen area before booking" so that's alright then).

Brits excelling themselves at thumbing their noses ar European bureaucracy here in this story. In this case, Swiss Coronavirus quarantine regulations. Quite why these folk thought it was a good idea to go on a skiing holiday in the middle of a pandemic is not known...

How much would a second home in Verbier cost I wonder?
Is this where the royals ski?
See also Marquess of Bute going home on a speed boat from Wemyss Bay. After have driven with others from London.

@crowriver - it's the same kind of bone-headed English public school idiocy that has plagued the UK response to Covid-19. Starting with the PM shaking hands with Covid-19 patients in hospital and pretty much every decision since. A life lived sheltered from the consequences of poor decision making that results in a feeling of invulnerability. Covid-19 is simply something that happens to other people. Or, if they do get it, then they will simply bounce back due to good breeding and a stubborn refusal to accept the facts.
(To be clear - I'm not saying everyone who went to an English public school is like this. They just seem to be good at churning out people with such attitudes).

I know a guy with a second home in Verbier. The tax man does not know him very well.

I look forward to the north of England being levelled up enough for everyone there to have a second home in Verbier (or the Pennines if they are properly patriotic).

@gembo: Is this where the royals ski?
Verbier isn't really exclusive enough for the senior royals. It gets rather full of overpaid English oiks (in evidence: I've skiied there myself, multiple times). Klosters is where Prince Charles likes to ski. Described as "all old money and understated refinement, in contrast with its flashy neighbour Davos*" A couple of the cable car gondolas in the resort have his name on them.
Edward and Sophie apparently prefer St Moritz - the quintessential "if you have to ask the price you can't afford it" resort. It's the place where they play polo on the frozen lake.
William & Kate seem to like Les Trois Vallées. I can't say that I blame them, I've been to Meribel more than a dozen times myself. I think they tend to favour Courchevel 1850, though.
@IWRATS: I know a guy with a second home in Verbier. The tax man does not know him very well.
Prince Andrew apparently has a chalet in Verbier. I'm sure he fits right in.

@ejstubbs, big knowledge on royals. I have been to the Iser Valley cycling. These ski resorts look like cowboy towns in summer. The cuprinol look is bad without the snow toppings
The high pass along to the monastery on the French Italian border Col de petit St Bernard is a thing of beauty but have only skied as wee boy in Scotland. With the Sunday school. No royals.

Last place I skied was Megève. It is one of the resorts frequented by stars and keeps a low profile. We were there because of family connections and stayed in a sort of bothy which I suspect could not be legally rented.
The stuff in the shop windows moves oddly as you walk by because the glass is six inches thick.
The climb up the Gorges du Arly would be a lovely ride in summer. Alpine without bursting an artery.

“@ejstubbs, big knowledge on royals“
CCE is FULL of EXPERTS.
Long may it continue.
@g we appreciate your Apple Pie expertise. (And your expertly unconventional use of words, often stunningly off-topic.)

Last time I was in Verbier, Victoria Beckham was there, she had a minion to carry her skis for her, natch.

Police Scotland taking no action after self publicists George Galloway entered a Level 4 area to watch a football match.
Decided to goad the authorities on Twitter as he does not think Scotland should have lockdown. There has been no apology made by Galloway, who has instead insisted that he “broke no law”, adding: “Although the law is in fact a capricious click of [Nicola] Sturgeon’s finger. And is an ass.”
Elsewhere he added: “Lol. I didn’t of course break any Covid protocols. They were followed to the letter as the club said. Unlike #ResignSturgeon #Resign Ferrier.”
The politician claimed: “I live in D&G [Dumfries and Galloway]. My family have FIVE season tickets. I’m about to be a sponsor. I’m spreading the word about the club to millions of people.”

I am angry and dismayed and frightened. CCE saw this coming six months ago. The countries that have done best have all done exactly the same thing which is to follow the basic principles of public health: close the borders, find cases and isolate them, drive down community transmission.
It's not that we are badly governed it's that we are barely governed?

"he does not think Scotland should have lockdown"
Does Scotland have lockdown? I thought it had "protection level" 4.
"entered a Level 4 area to watch a football match"
He lives in the council area apparently. Queen's still shouldn't have let him attend.
I'm going to break the habit of a lifetime and agree with "Gorgeous" George on something, namely that he's infinitely less of a health threat than Margaret Ferrier was.

"Frustrated residents have hit out after 'hundreds' of cars parked near the popular Pentland Hills during the level four shutdown in mainland Scotland.
Pictures obtained by Edinburgh Live from dash cam footage of a resident who was heading to the area to feed birds, appears to show hundreds of parked cars clogging up the Balerno area."

Yep
Bit like the people who ‘support more bike lanes” - but still don’t want any road closures near them...

I had to drive through to Fife On Sunday to take my mum to her Dundee hospital appointment on Monday. The roads were surprisingly busy and loads of cars had more than one occupant. Flouting the stay local, essential journeys rules I'd say.

Hard to follow that article. Also the photos aren’t helping me. The only place I can think of with organised bird feeders is the hide at Bavelaw. If you were one of the volunteers lugging supplies you could maybe argue you had to drive,
But this looks to maybe be along the top road at Harlaw??one commentator thought you could take the bus and walk up Kirk Brae instead of parking on the road side.?
Was busy on Boxing Day into the Harlaw car park as I cycled through the jam. The local walking loop on lymphoy was also hoaching yesterday but a little quieter today tho number two daughter reports was busy up at Harlaw.

Local motor dumping update.
The 25% of on-street vehicle abandonment spaces in my street that were empty over Xmastide are now full again.
So either commuters are back or quite a lot of folk are scofflaws when it comes to Covid regulations.
I note the campervans and motorhome have yet to return. Also sotted a car with German licence plates that I've not seen here before. AirBnB guest? International student not allowed to park at their purpose built accommodation (due to no spaces)? EU citizen returning after Xmas break having bought a new motor?

"Figures show there have been more new cases in the Scottish capital than East Lothian, Midlothian, West Lothian and Fife combined"
Posted 4 years ago # -
Case rates per 100k population show a somewhat different picture to the raw numbers.
Posted 4 years ago # -
I guess what's more important at a personal level, is your chances of coming across someone with Covid in the street.
So Edinburgh with it's 140 per 100K rate potentially means there's 700 folk wandering around within a 164 square mile area.
Whereas Fife for example at 107 per 100K, might have 385 people wandering around an 823 square mile area, which means you could be around 5 X more likely to come across someone with the disease in Edinburgh...
(appreciate in fife numbers in larger towns will be higher than the rural areas, so 5X will be a higher than likely)

If you drill down into the local area data up to Boxing Day, it's incredibly varied even within areas next to each other. So for example, the Covid hotspots in Edinburgh over the past week appear to be Corstorphine (26), Gracemount/Burdiehouse (25), East Craigs (22), Liberton West/Braid Hills (22), and Jewel/Brunstane/Newcraighall (18). Meanwhile areas like Abbeyhill, Joppa and Prestonfield have close to none, and the virus is considered "supressed".
Maybe all the local Covidiots went somewhere else for Chrimbo, and will bring the virus back with them. Next week's local figures will make for interesting or perhaps chilling reading...

The figures are already chilling, 51000 for all UK, and 1800 for Scotland today.
We may in Scotland be saved from the worst because of the earlier lockdown, but I fear for England just now. This will be worse than March. My advice is to hide.
Posted 4 years ago # -
Fife data quite interesting too. Virus "suppressed" in St Andrews, Burntisland; but places like Inverkeithing/N. Queensferry, Dunfermline, Glenrothes, Leslie, Methil not so lucky.
