    Lockdown from midnight tonight...

    ---

People in Scotland are to be ordered to stay at home until the end of January amid a fresh Covid-19 lockdown.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said new curbs would be introduced at midnight in a bid to contain the new, faster-spreading strain of the virus.

I getting so sick of this. The govt should have done this in Nov when it was becoming apparent it was required.

Yes, rather late in the day. It could be worse - look at the utter chaos in England just now.

National lockdown from midnight. Why say on Marr and again last night schools were safe and kids should go?

Seems to me the UKgov often tacks towards doing less then uses the "growing pressure" pushback to make political headroom to do more. All those U-turns. I'm not sure it's a conscious strategy though, most of the time.

@bax, I think it's the March regime, i.e. only a certain distance allowed from home?

Nope, From what I can see bax has it right. The only limitation is starting and finishing within 5 miles of the boundary if you are driving to exercise & starting & finishing in the same place.

its all a bit confusing. my daily circuit is the same as last April, so i'll just continue as usual.

would like to think we'll be returning to those extra-quiet road conditions but its highly unlikely that any drivists will go along with it this time round

"its highly unlikely that any drivists will go along with it this time round"

They only did son for a couple of weeks during the first lockdown. Now that they know they can get away with it, I expect a lot of recreational driving to ensue...

Words were 'stay as close as possible to your home' when exercising, or phrased to give me that impression. Like speed limits, they're meant to be safe Maxima, not a target minimum. Anyome who can even logistically contemplate getting more than five miles from home for the rest of the month should think themselves lucky and not push it.

Spotted a chap doing loops of balerno there. Roads have at least been gritted.

i agree with that in theory

but in reality i choose to cycle around 8km each way to get to a relatively safe exercise circuit - three loops of that then straight back home

no chance i'd cycle the local roads in fife every day, i wouldn't last a fortnight

@bax can you share with us your ninja skills that help you last as long a fortnight on fife roads?

Even early on a Sunday morning where most other areas are quiet the roads in the Kingdom are driven on most atrociously

You can travel for local outdoor sport or exercise such as meeting another person, walking, cycling, golf or running that starts and finishes at the same place (which can be up to 5 miles from the boundary of your local authority area), as long as you abide by the rules on meeting other households.

    Indoor sports facilities are closed.

    Outdoor gyms can remain open.

But once you have started exercising you can go as far as you like - but you should keep in mind that, for example if you get a mechanical that you can't fix and you don't have an other half with a car to fetch you you'll be walking; or for a different example you go up on the snowy Pentlands and hurt yourself you'll affect a lot of people who need to rescue you. So you should be sensible - but "sensible" depends on your experience. An experienced Audaxer might have a different level of "un-repairable mechanical" to yours truly, for example...

The rule seems contradictory to the 'stay at home' command.

I get that it's there for people who live in cities, buy theoretically I could drive to Broughty Ferry 40 miles away and start my walk/cycle from there.

Also means that my wife, who hasn't been allowed to drive into West Lothian to see her mum since forever, could now do so for a 'walk round the park'.

yeah, we could make our way to Broughty Ferry then cycle round Dundee, or the outskirts of Perth, but Edinburgh is out of bounds

And we in Edinburgh can go to South Queensferry but not Musselburgh, while my friend who lives a very near Hillend but a few hundred meters into Midlothian can't climb Cearketton (in Edinburgh) but can go up the hills outside Gladhouse. If you ignore the 5 miles bit.

They have to draw lines somehow. "Stay within or near your council area" is at least reasonably easy to understand. Be grateful if you live in Highland and not in Dundee...

Personal opinion is that 'local authority' area is too broad.

The rule is designed for people who live in cities to be able to get into the countryside for some fresh air, not for people who already live in the countryside to visit other countryside.
People wonder why there is so much traffic driving about.

I think it should be more specific say, 5 miles from your town/city.

At least that's how I personally interpret it, so for me in Burntisland, I consider Dalgety Bay and Kirkcaldy as my perimeter.

seems to me it would make a lot more sense to say "you must not use your car to assist in any recreational activity" and leave it at that

@bax, be careful, you invite the wrath of the dog walking fraternity at your peril.

For it is written, Thou Shalt Load Fido Into The Motor And Make A Nuisance Of Thyself On The Beach Or In The Park Or In The Farmer's Field.

Also, Thou Shalt Drive To The Car Park At The Foot Of The Mountain Before Bagging The Munro.

Golf courses closed to golfers but open to exercisers?

Gowf courses remain open apparently, gembo

    • Golf courses can remain open for play with a maximum of two players from up to two households.

    • Golfers must stay close to home, travel only for essential purposes and in line with the new legislation.

Had almost forgotten than golf was shut early on. Outdoor gyms specifically cited as able to remain open, presumably including the many different outdoor exercise outfits on Leith Links where people unload weights, kettle bells, weight benches etc. from a van and harangue people to do circuits on the grass?

"Golfers must stay close to home, travel only for essential purposes and in line with the new legislation."

But for any other type of excercise (walk/cycle/run) you can ignore that...
Given the people constraint golf surely isn't more risky than walking in the park 5 miles outside your local authority?
