Funny but they would of course shoot us like dogs if we tried that.

Now that people can't go to the pub, I predict panic buying of booze next...
Posted 5 years ago # -
“Can’t”?
I expect a changing list of which pubs are open.

Sorry, "have been advised not to": amounts to the same thing for all but the die-hards...

"Perhaps more importantly, especially for very keen audaxers, improving/maintaining their mental health."
You are right, but it will be solo riding - not as nice in my book

‘Evidence’ seems to be that ‘most people’ will get it, so why not beat the NHS overload rush?
Obviously knowing you have it and going out in public is probably irresponsible/anti-social (might be illegal next week).
Just off to the Coop to see if there is anything left to (not) panic buy.

“not as nice in my book“
Understand
But seems excessive for “DIY events”.
Some people may/do prefer solo rides or find it hard to find companions for longer rides.
Also (I understand) people ride for personal achievements or to qualify for long events.
Plus fit in rides around domestic/work commitments.
Presume there is a forum with #NotDIYsPlease somewhere(?)

Teams went down last night. It seems to be creaking today.
Wonder how 'infinite' Microsoft, AWS,Google etc really are... We're going to find out soon..

I was wondering about grabbing the bike and bivvy but wife kiboshed that thought before it fully formed!

I was in the office yesterday and a few folk had tried to wfh but the network couldn't manage so they came in, I wonder how long before it dies now everyone is being told to wfh.
Apparently 1000 extra laptops had been built to facilitate some form of contingency for the call centre. I can't see the infrastructure coping with over 1000 extra voip etc connections.

Yes - there are folk that will go and do solo DIYs thorughout the year. It does seem harsh. But it might encourage some to go in groups, visiting cafes, pretty much as cyclingmollie, me and 3 others did last weekend.
Gonna miss that badly.Posted 5 years ago # -
“Gonna miss that badly.”
Depends how things develop
Some cafes will need the custom.
Soon be warm enough to put tables outside.
A metre apart should be fine on an outdoor ride.

Regular mid-distance commuters will be familiar with the early warning system where your legs give out around 20% less power than usual and you know you're probably coming down with a mild respiratory infection in a day or so.
In my experience, this is not the case with pneumonia. You can feel fine one minute, and a complete inability to continue the next. Its the bonk x1000.
Something for the route-plotting solo cyclist to consider this year.

CBI tells MPs hundreds of thousands of jobs at risk if government does not provide proper support
Maybe millions.
Time for confiscation of all bank accounts with over £1bn in.
(Not that I think that’s how banks work.)
Can anyone explain how it’s ‘possible’ - like France did yesterday - to produce staggering sums of money by creating debt/borrowing money.
Who/how is this debt taken on?
I vaguely understand the idea of gilts - government bonds that are guaranteed by super-reliable (really - these days?) Govs.
BUT
Who has the money to buy them?
I know the simple answer is pension funds (etc), but there must come a limit to what they are able/willing to finance.

“Something for the route-plotting solo cyclist to consider this year.”
I was thinking something like that.
How far is it wise to go away from reliable bus/train routes and/or rescuing relatives?

@chdot governments 'borrow' the money from central banks, who, since we abandoned the gold standard, are literally allowed to create money from nothing.

I'm meant to be going to a gig at Audio in Glasgow on Thursday - the venue only holds 150 people and they're officially going ahead with all events because they can't afford to cancel them, since their insurance won't cover it because the government hasn't officially told gatherings to be cancelled.
The venue is also suggesting that anyone who does cancel a ticket (I presume they mean for other small venues) should donate it instead, so the venue and act don't end up out of pocket.I'm probably going to end up not going anyway; I've seen the band a few times before. Although on the flip side, there'll probably only be about 7 folk there...

@ bax
Thanks
Will the documentary tell me everything I need to know??
I sort of knew your explanation, but at what point does the ‘Govs inventing/borrowing enough money to finance business as usual’ system collapse?
Weeks away?
I still don’t know whether to believe the Brown/Darling line about ‘hours away from the (UK) banking system collapsing’ in 2008.
Might have been easier to deal with than the worst CV scenarios.
If Gov bails out the airlines, and not much else, this afternoon, will there be rioting in the streets?

@chdot
Money does not function as people think it does - even people working in technical roles in banks. I'm not sure how Euro creation works, but Sterling creation and destruction mechanisms (there are three) are described by the Bank of England here;
Main point is that money creation does not create additional real world resources. The two are supposed to be connected but they don't have to be.
In a real crisis money is irrelevant and decisions are taken at the level of real-world resources. Factories are commandeered, people are conscripted, food is rationed and farmers are told what to grow. If this carries on its current trajectory we'll get to the post-money situation shortly.

“If this carries on its current trajectory we'll get to the post-money situation shortly.”
Whatever is announced this afternoon may be an (accidentally) defining signature.
“In a real crisis money is irrelevant and decisions are taken at the level of real-world resources.”
Yes, but ‘now’ the people laid off or forced to apply for Sick Pay (UK amount worse than most European countries) need some sort of reassurance about how the basic bills will be covered.
Definitely in ‘one pay cheque from disaster’ territory.

We could be in this for the very long term.
It is worth stressing this is all based on mathematical models. They make assumptions, they are not perfect and what they find is not written in stone. This virus emerged only in December and we're still trying to fully understand it. The scale and role of asymptomatic infections or the summer weather in the pandemic are still unknown.

"Some people may prefer solo rides"
I'm about 75/25 on this. I usually prefer solo rides. Mainly because group rides or events often bring out the competitive show-off streak in folk, which I can't abide. OTOH when I struggled on a couple of Audax rides, teaming up with supportive fellow riders got me through the worst of it.
