Meanwhile in England, my dad has had his first (AstraZeneca) injectionn this morning, 30 minutes from home by car in a place not currently accessible by public transport at that time of the morning. The alternative venue was 45 minutes' drive away, but only able to be reached by public transport with an overnight stay six miles away. Shortly after he made his appointment he was phoned by his GP offering a later appointment a mere 10 minutes' walk from home, but later than today. Presumably the many non-driving codgers in their village's many elderhomes are being bussed to vaccination hubs or visited in-situ.

“they could try that if the nurseries in question were owned by the councils“
OK, I assumed you were talking about council ones.

Boris Johnson 'optimistic' about summer holiday prospects

From Falkirk... as told to National.
“I’ve had patients say to me, ‘I wish I had listened, I didn’t listen. I didn’t really believe it was real,’ so that was quite an eye-opener,” she said.
“The last few weeks have been extremely busy and challenging. It’s definitely different to the first wave.
“We’ve seen a lot more admissions with Covid-related symptoms – we’ve seen lots of groups of family members admitted with Covid, a lot of young people, which you didn’t see so much in the first wave.
“We’ve had some extremely sick people. Patients discussed with ITU (intensive treatment unit), some transferred to ITU. It’s definitely been a lot more challenging.”
“The reasons for it getting worse I think I can only assume that people weren’t following the guidelines.
“We’ve seen a huge spike in our cases, so I think we can all assume that family get-togethers at Christmas are one of the reasons our cases have gone up so much.
“It does annoy me slightly, lots of staff members are adhering to the policies and guidelines, trying really hard to socially distance and then you’ve got people who refuse to believe this is real.
“We still have the element of people that don’t believe.”

Scotland may prioritise younger pupils when reopening schools, says health chief
Younger pupils may be allowed to return to Scottish schools earlier than forecast, because progress is being made suppressing the latest Covid-19 outbreak, Sturgeon’s national clinical director Jason Leitch has said.
Nicola Sturgeon, the first minister, is due to update MSPs later on Tuesday on any adjustments to the strict lockdown rules across most of Scotland, which has led to all mainland schools being largely closed.

“There are still 40,000 Australians stranded overseas. Every celebrity who takes up a place in quarantine is a place denied to a stranded Australian,” she said.

"Scottish schools to start phased return this month"
Not sure how I feel about this yet.
I know the boy (P2 so will be first back) will be better taught - I can't manage the time to do his lessons when Mrs B is at work. And I know from a mental health perspective he will be much happier, the difference in him last time was night and day when he went back to school.But... there is that worry...

@Baldcyclist, well exactly. Any kind of social mixing can only spread the virus.
Not sure I'm entirely comfortable with my kids heading back to school anytime soon. Youngest is P7 so unlikely to go back as early; Oldest is doing National 5s this year but I don't think needs any practical access to workshops etc. so unlikely to be back part-time later in the month.
I wonder what the EIS thinks about all this? No vaccination for teaching and support staff so far...
Overall seems to early to be making this announcement. Though perhaps those with pre-school age children will be looking forward to having some free time.

@srd, I like the way they roll in your house

@crowriver, I'm not so much looking forward to having free time with my toddler in nursery as I am looking forward to being able to go back to full time work. I'm self employed and had to cut my hours to 50% as it's not possible to work while looking after a 3 year old! From the recent studies I've read kids that young transmit at a far lower rate than others. There'll be a community bump due to staff and parents interacting but nursery staff tend to be younger and lower risk and it's a balance between that and getting lots of parents back to work full time and allowing kids to interact with their peers again which is so important at that age.
EIS aren't too happy - they think the P1-P3 groups should be socially distancing. Good idea but I don't see how that can work in practice, our school doesn't even have desks in P1/P2 it's mostly play based learning.

In most other countries the kids in P1/P2 would still be in Kindergarten. So I suppose if nursery are going back, fair enough. Forget about social distancing at that age - impossible.
I don't underestimate the impact on parents of young children at home. It's tricky enough with teens and pre-teens. Some colleagues with young children are finding it very difficult to WFH. Though if it's a state nursery place that doesn't offer enough sessions to hold down full-time work, most full-timers need to pay the equivalent of a second mortgage/rent for a private nursery place.

Not in Edinburgh Crowriver, many of the children in P2 in Edinburgh are a little older than kindergarten due to the parental preference for delaying school entry, but this is not a preference the rest of Scotland are interested in So your point stands.
EIS basically a trade Union protecting its members. Prefers all home learning despite it not working for the poor. Argues for social distancing amongst the younger kids whilst knowing this is impossible. This is ok from perspective of a trade Union trying to protect its members.

My youngest is p2 she hadn't learned to learn yet, she has missed so much school she just won't engage with me or her mum when I comes to school work her frustration leads to massive tantrums. Which means I can't work while I deal with her and my wife teaches the other two.
My work doesn't just go away if I don't do it so I'm in a perpetual cycle of slipping deadlines or working after the kids go to bed, neither is great.
Teachers need to be higher on the list for the vaccine but the exec need to pull their finger out and actually get on with the vaccination programme.

@steveo, that is tough.
Wee ones going back first is interesting. Might work but vax needs to be happening for sure. Also the more virulent variant has made it from south east of England to Southport so that is only a matter of time til it appears up here?
Posted 4 years ago # -
I don't know how you'd do it but I'd love to see parents of wee ones allowed to count home schooling as work. In most cases it will be of far more public valuable than what they do for salary.

Apparently furlough is open to people home schooling but my company let so many people go at the tail end of last year that they claim not to have the capacity to start losing parents.

I've got my vaccine appointment for next week at the EICC. Much earlier than I expected.

I believe it's commonly held that DNA and RNA mutations are at the heart of human existence. And indeed all other life forms.
But I could be wrong.

Indeed, we held back our eldest, otherwise they'd have been the youngest in their class. That was only because of a birthday this month though.
The kids are missing so much, it is tough. Difficult for them to keep motivated. I know how they feel!

Feel your pain @steveo
Currently home schooling a 7 year old, looking after a 5 year old and a 2 year old with some invaluable help from grandparents. The Mrs is a doctor so she's working long hours at the moment and is exhausted when she's not working. Meanwhile work expect no reduction in productivity. Impossible.
