@bax - I remember you wondering about the possible effect of vaccination on people who have already had Covid. You might be interested in this study (pre-print, not yet peer reviewed). Looks promising - previous Covid sufferers should only need one dose of the current two dose mRNA vaccines to achieve similar levels of protection to two doses in someone who has not had Covid.

I only touched on immunology briefly in my studies. Intrigued to know why exposure to the pathogen gives less immunity than exposure to mRNA coding for one protein of the pathogen.

@crowriver: Seem to recall reading somewhere that Lothian vaccination was slow getting "ramped up"* due to ... community vaccination being mainly led by local GP practices

I read that Edinburgh has the largest vaccination centre in Scotland, at the EICC. Mind you, I also read that there have been issues with the way that is being run.

I agree it's not a race, and it's best that things be done in an effective and well-managed way. But there do seem to be some on-the-face-of-it valid question marks over whether that is actually the case.

Well assuming you don't get the disease while NHS Lothian is being "effective".

    @IWRATS

The @morningsider paper is saying that real infection plus single subsequent dose of vaccine is as effective if not more so than two doses of vaccine in naive people.

From the @morningsider paper and others, it seems like real infection and vaccination appear to be broadly equivalent in terms of preventing you from catching the virus in the first place, and certainly can hugely reduce (if not eliminate) the possibility that you'd become severely unwell if you were to be infected.

At least for the original variant(s). For variants containing the E484K mutation the chances of catching and getting ill are increased, but vaccination or previous exposure should still be protective to some degree. Despite the media hysteria it's all positive news ***FROM AN IMMUNOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE***. As long as de Pfeffel doesn't throw away all of the progress (again) by relaxing the rules, inducing a 3rd wave and a whole new opportunity to gather mutations...

I was offered my second vaccine if, at short notice, I could travel after work from East Lothian to Ingliston last Tuesday in the snow. I didn't take up the offer. Most of the people I support still haven't had the first jag. And yet:

"Younger people with learning disabilities aged 18 to 34 are 30 times more likely to die of Covid than others the same age, according to Public Health England".

says person who thinks that private jets using biofuel are somehow part of the solution rather than the problem.

Where does he think the bio fuel comes from, what is it mixed with. What better uses does he think such vast amounts of biofuel could be used for?

The biggest problem for stabilising the composition of the atmosphere is really rich people. Really rich people are a really big problem. They are carbon dioxide super-spreaders.

    From @chdot link ( https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/crime/edinburgh-drivers-fined-lockdown-trips-east-lothian-seaside-town-3134477 )

the current rules “could not have been any clearer”.

    And yet they say:

Local outdoor recreation, sport or exercise, walking, cycling, golf, or running that starts and finishes at the same place can be up to five miles from the boundary of your local authority area

Which is not the current stay at home guidance as we discussed here before.

Their lazy writing made me laugh a bit.

“says person who thinks that private jets using biofuel are somehow part of the solution rather than the problem”

    Indeed.

Was quite pleased with himself for being willing (able) to pay 3 times as much for “biofuel”.

His ‘vision’ is for Govs to subside research and venture capital to fund the scaling up of “new technologies”.

No idea if that is a good/credible/optimal model.

ONE ‘good thing’ to come out of Covid is to see ‘science’ and ‘biotech’ and universities and (to some extent) Govs managing to not only produce effective vaccines but also at a pace that was previously said to be ‘impossible’.

So instead of ‘back to normal as soon as possible’ (Ⓒ various Tory backbenchers) opportunities for some serious consideration/planning for other.

If Bill Gates were to award himself a modest salary, let say $100k p.a.*, then spent the rest of his billions rewilding the world, we might actually get somewhere on climate change...

*I realise this is still a lot of money to many people.
