Was a pedestrian in city centre this afternoon with reasonable excuse (had to pay a cheque in at bank, and my local branch closed nearly two years ago).

Whilst it was not crowded, did not feel exactly quiet either. Lots of folk out and about, especially on Princes Street. This is despite most retail being shut. Not that it's a bad thing at all, good to see folk out for a walk. Didn't feel much like lockdown though, even with non-essential retail shuttered. Also traffic levels were much higher than I expected on a Wednesday afternoon.

This all said, Princes Street Gardens very pleasant, and Waverly Bridge much improved with SfP measures in place: long may these stick around.

Decline in UK Covid rates slowing with possible increase in some areas - study

The coronavirus is still around and dangerous and people should keep to the rules, the health secretary Matt Hancock has warned, as new data showed a slowing in the decline of infections and a possible slight increase in London, the south-east and the Midlands.

More than four in 10 over-80s in England breaking lockdown rules after receiving one vaccine dose

More than four in 10 over-80s in England may have met with someone outside of their support bubble within three weeks of receiving the first jab of the Covid vaccine, an official survey suggests.

The Office for National Statistics has reported that almost half (49%) of the 2,070 over-80s surveyed perceived Covid to be a major or significant risk to them personally without vaccination, but this decreased to 5% if they were to receive both doses of the vaccine.

@chdot, will try to work that into the equation.

Just been down Sighthill Helath Centre for my first Jag (old, bad lungs)

Calder Road is entirely rammed with traffic at every roundabout, mentally busy. None of it at health centre that is a steady but small flow of people using the Napier Uni Car park

I'm out every weekday, travelling in East Lothian and to Mid and West as a care worker and I can see no difference between the traffic levels now and those before lockdown. The city by-pass is as busy as ever.

Had first Covid vaccine on Mon (Astra Zenica), had some mild side effects: next day was fine, but on the Weds I developed fuzzy and sometimes sore head for about 36 hours, had muscle ache accross my back shoulders and arms for 48 hours, still have a sore arm arround the injection site today though everything else is gone. Was also breathless for 24 hours, but given I'm asthmatic that could have just been that.

Wee bit annoying, but I'm sure Covid would have been a lot more annoying...

Ed Davey, the leader of the Lib Dems, accused the government of being “addicted to wasting taxpayers’ money on bad contracts with private firms, while refusing to pay our NHS and care staff properly”. He added: “Gavin Williamson should take a look at how the Lib Dem education minister in Wales, Kirsty Williams, got free school meals to children, when she refused to sign a contract with Edenred, used local councils instead and delivered a better service. The Tories’ use of poorly performing expensive private contractors in the pandemic is a scandal, in sharp contrast to the heroic performance of the NHS and so many councils.”

I'm sure the two gentleman in tweed caps who passed me on the Lang Whang this afternoon were making an essential journey. Perhaps to urgently stock up on food, or to care for animals or a person in their bubble or to drive to the start of a walk. I mean, a vintage supercharged Bentley is the obvious choice for making an essential trip like that.

Or perhaps, like me, they were just on the Lang Whang for a bit of enjoyment. The only reasons I begrudge them that is (a) it would have been illegal for them to be out for that reason (b) it was such a stupid choice of car to do it in, as the only reason I can see to be in one is 'for fun' (which I'm sure it was: it did sound amazing).

sadly the NHS will do no such thing

instead it will shrug, sigh, pout, and ask what on earth do you expect it to do about anything

you have anxiety, and they have a website for that

@Anti-Bax those slides are by an independent researcher at an Ohio summit. Anything more rigorous before I consult my virologist chum? He was cross with me in Jan 2021 when I asked about the different strains in China

However, she insisted the Fringe Society was committed to tackling wide-ranging criticism of the event in recent years, saying she wanted the event to be part of the solution to overtourism and sustainability concerns “rather than always being identified as part of the problem”.

Lots of key workers commuting by road today - big queues of motor traffic. Among the unusual commuter vehicles spotted: VW campers, Porsche Carerras, and soft top convertibles. Amazing how a wee bit of Sunday sunshine brings out the work ethic in folk!

That American anti-vax thing reminds me of various flat earth websites which are jam packed with ‘science’ but are none the less fundamentally a pile of shite.

@Bax - had a look at that link. I do not understand the science, so I can't comment on that. However, the author states:

...vaccinologists, clinicians and scientists are merely focusing on the (positive) short-term results and impact at an individual level. Nobody seems to be looking at the consequences and risk at a human population level (which, according to my understanding, will become manifest quite soon).

How likely is it that no-one involved in developing, testing and approving vaccines and the wider public health response has thought about the longer term impact of a mass immunisation programme? Given that the worldwide response to Covid-19 is possibly the biggest peace time science and policy effort ever, I'm going to say there is no chance this hasn't been considered.

My confidence is boosted by reports that researchers are currently working to tweak vaccines to deal with new variants. Regulators are readying approval processes. The UK and Scottish Governments are already planning for the delivery of these new vaccines as "booster" shots. I think we've got this.
