North Lanarkshire shut down the gyms and pools this evening. I knew before the pool staff did.

Glasgow schools still open but the kids are voting with their feet.

We're setting up lots of teams.I ordered a big green screen so I can send the kids videos without them seeing the stuff I keep in the music room. That's where the computer is too.

Three concerts I should have been at this week have been cancelled.

I have warned the memsahib that if the school shuts I'll have more time to learn the trumpet. She's not happy about this.

We at home feel similar to what you described. Initially had a bit of a fever, muscle aches and other flu-like symptoms which disappeared quickly, but chest is tight and uncomfortable, can't seem to properly fill lungs. Was quite frightening at first. This is day 5 of symptoms for me. No cough as of yet but wife has one. Kids are all unwell but nothing out of the ordinary.

We'll be quarantined for the two weeks but I am itching to get back on the bike.

@bax and @CocoShepherd my wife is getting exactly the same. Fine one minute then struggling to breathe properly the next. I'm still at the flu like stage, a few days behind her. Can feel a tightness in my breathing but nothing too bad yet. I'm already a full time homeworker so it's not far from the office to bed when necessary!

The problem is the instructions coming out of Public Health England and the government, which is attempting to control the UK epidemic by mathematical modelling.

“Any such model is only as good as the input data, and the data going into this one are not necessarily applicable to the UK being based on countries with very different behaviour patterns,” he said. “They are also solely intended to flatten the curve, when even a flat curve will kill thousands. These approaches would be an acceptable experiment if there were no alternatives but we have strategies from elsewhere that have been shown to work.”

We should be learning the lessons, he says, from the sharp lockdown in Hubei – and the very energetic contact tracing that has taken place in South Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore. The approach of the UK falls far short of that.

Note - if you follow @bax's link to the symptoms page, don't scroll down and read the patient histories if you're of a hypochondriac frame of mind.

police and immigration officers to detain a person, for a limited period, who is, or may be, infectious and to take them to a suitable place

enabling the death management system to deal with increased demand for its services

directing others not directly involved in the funeral sector, to provide necessary support

@NoBrakes - take care and hope things will improve. Very tricky for you. One member of your family was down in London but did it start before then?
As we guessed it was only a matter of time before someone we knew having this.

    @bax & @cocoshepherd also of course too.

@LaidBack Son was in Manchester with the school, we've all avoided London. Pretty sure my wife contracted it from a patient at work.

The worst thing is the new shiny Metabike you gave me to test sitting in the garage. It's goading me for being a wuss and not riding it!

Mr fimm suggests that you can only panic buy if you drove to the shop. There's a limit to how much you can carry on your person or bike.

We're OK so far. Various clubs we are involved with stopping all activities until further notice.

I'm going to have to stop reading this thread - I'm a terrible hypochondriac...

Working from home for first time in this role. Never much cared for it so it is not going to be easy in the long term.

Exercise breaks will be key to survival I think. Cycle home has been grim for the last three months but that grimness is the stuff of resilience.

i feel sorry for folk susceptible to anxiety / panic attacks because the oscillating nature of the symptoms will not be easy for them

If this is true, that in many cases the symptoms are barely noticeable, then there must be 1000s if not 10s of 1000s of cases already out there

First day of home working. To help retain what little sanity I have, and to prevent me from appearing in a Channel 5 documentary about the hyper-obese, I have decided to instigate a faux commute each morning. What better way is there to start that day than a commute that ends back home?

I got caught in a nasty hail shower and very close passed by a scaffolding lorry. Nice to know that not everything has changed.

Solidarity. If you wish to arrange 5m passes on the summit of Braid Hill each morning I'm up for that. Trails likely to be safer than semi-deserted streets.

I'm going for lunchtime runs so I'm free in the morning if anyone needs a close pass or fix of verbal abuse. I can probably get through the whole bingo card if you cycle slowly enough.

@fimm - that's a point. I've been buying stuff at Tesco Express and haven't seen much difference in stocks. Meanwhile Sainsbury's aisles have been emptied.

We've been sent home to "work from home", however I don't have a connection to do so, and can't do much of my job at home anyway. So just sent home.

The National Trust has been opening the parks round stately homes and gardens free, which is very good, encouraging people to exercise. Unfortunately they've made the car parks free as well.

No more exits through the gift shop.

Finally free to WFH, so preparing to leave the building after one last risk-filled trip through the changing rooms.

The oddest things occur to me as I try to think this thing through.

I had the sudden thought that no one will get a professional haircut for a year. The whole country's going to wind up shaggy or home-scalped.

Theresa May, the former PM, asks if Johnson agrees that it may be difficult to ease the social isolation rules before a vaccine is necessary. Does the PM agree, and how will the government have an exit strategy from these measures. Johnson says the government’s policy is to push down the peak of the epidemic. And he says he is confident that the country will get through this.
