Maybe once the pubs and cafes re-open then the countryside might get a bit quieter. At least on weekdays. Just don't try to head to the hills at the weekend, because the hills are alive with experience-seekers.

If you think it's bad now, wait until the summer. Especially the English school holidays. Lots of experience-hungry folk will be unable to leave the island and instead take city breaks in Scotland or head for the Highlands...

It was taps aff in Montgomery Street Park as I passed by this afternoon. Not a pretty sight for the most part. Cheap cider being quaffed also. I wasn't tempted to join the throng, despite not having a garden to sunbathe in. Also a chap roller skiing along Montgomery Street - not sure how he navigated the speed bumps.

I mean, the sun's been out all day and it was pleasant, but not that warm. Folk do go a bit crazy when we get a wee bit nice weather!

    “but not that warm”

Depends what you are used to/expecting.

Busy beaches are great for sensational telephoto lens press photographs but are in fact not great for successful aerosol virus transmission. If you're the type of person who's not bothered about breaking the rules regardless, I'd much rather you were doing it on a breezy beach than in a tiny flat.

If anything I'd expect good weather would cause numbers to fall rather than rise as illicit indoor gatherings that you can't see happen less in favour of safer (but more visible) outdoor ones.

@jonty you might have something there and certainly no beaches in Livingston the hotspot of Covid. Much leisure in Livi has always been focused on The Malls so I imagine fair bit of indoor fireworks burning Covid fingers.

    Rules bent all over.

Total Ned and his missus in apple pie not bothering about masks. Looked like they had been for a run. He might have been shaking the lactic acid out of his limbs but very jangly in his movements, staff desperate to get them served and out but they were buying the shop.yeah then he gets a phone call so we all have to wait until he finishes that until he pays.

Least favourite person of yesterday. Did ask a rapha clad lad sitting on the back steps on the Masonic Club if he could show me his Penny which was a laugh.

Anyway as has been said upthread the people now are ahead of the rules.

The next 30million vaccines are going to be tougher to administer.

The worst offending local division for people being issued fines was Edinburgh's South East - with 1,302 FTNs issued.

Rebel scooter club in city. These guys are Covid deniers? Largest errant group by far on our walk today. No masks and close together.

Apparently a chap from Peru. Gave his reason for being in the country to see Big Ben? They let him in after he gave them his home address (c/o Aunt Lucy, Retired Home for Bears, Lima, Peru)

    Aye, that'll work.

Do young Neds pay attention to online petitions?

Pubs will be open soon enough and the drunken brawls will go back to their pre-pandemic patterns most likely, i.e. avoid the Cowgate after chucking out time on the weekend.

Fraser obvs takes the business angle, that's his brief. Have to say though that the prospect of a "bumper" "staycation" summer fills me with dread...

Being a flaneur in Dundee or necking a hip flask of Absinthe in Aberdeen. Risky.

Depressing to hear Chris Whitty saying there might well be a third wave despite the vaccine success. Chile mentioned as they have vaccinated almost as much as us but are experiencing a third wave after relaxing restrictions, but he failed to mentioned that over half the vaccine used in Chile was the Chinese Sino Vac which has only about 50% efficacy and has still not got WHO approval . Not all vaccines are created equal- seems the main one we are using is much better, ( tempted to compare British made bikes with Chinese ones as an irreverent and irrelevant example)- so maybe it will not come to pass . Variants may beg to differ.

@gembo, have actually been on a dérive in Dundee. Couple off sketchy moments but otherwise a fascinating way of navigating a very walkable city.

@jss, AZ only 76% effective? Most oldies and health care workers got Pfizer (90% effective) the rest of us plebs are getting AZ. So yeah, third wave is coming...

Covid case updates were paused over Easter but have now been updated again (on the PHS website).
Last number for Edinburgh before Easter was 56/week/100k, latest number now is 34.
Scotland as a whole has also seen a drop. So a little bit of good news for now.

Aye, it's looking good in Edinburgh unless you live in Granton West and Salvesen, or Colinton/Kingsknowe, the two Covid hotspots this past week. Most areas with no cases at all.

@crowriver - US phase 3 testing of AZ has come up with 100%eficacy against severe infection , 85% against symptomatic infection for over 65 s, 76% all ages for symptomatic infection.
So seems a bit less effective for younger people ( who usually don’t get serious symptoms) As an old b of 70 plus, I ain’t complainin .

My sister lives in the wilds of Renfrewshire (for reasons best known to herself). She got Covid two weeks after receiving the first AZ shot. She claims to have been following all the rules, and I believe her. Very unlucky.

So, as the Sergeant on Hill Street Blues says "Hey. Let's be careful out there."

@crowriver did your sister have to attend New Love Street for the jag? My relatives in the wilds of Renfrewshire were fulminating about this.

The vax does not prevent transmission but likely to reduce likelihood of hospitalization. Something Aunty Bax would point out if he was not in self imposed exile.

If you're in the 76% who are protected from symptomatic infection, can you still pass it on?

@gembo, I'm not sure where she went for the vax. She is "raging" about catching the virus though - if she'd managed to hold out another week she might have had immunity (or 76% probability anyway).

Yeah the vaccine doesn't stop you catching the blasted thing, but should reduce likelihood of serious illness and avoid hospital.

    AZ vaccine.

"EMA - Blood clots should be listed as a side effect".

    "No specific risk factors"

    "Benefits outway the risks".

I'll still be going back for my second jab when I get my letter.

MHRA : Under 30's will not be offered AZ vaccine because of link to clots.:
