a southern African friend of mine (long term UK resident, University lecturer) had really bad side effects. now saying he wishes he'd had sinopharm (which is what they're allocating in Zimbabwe).

I do wish that Boris et al hadn't made such a nationalistic jingoistic fuss about AZ. Makes it all worse in so many complicated ways.

@SRD, the side effects may be bad but at least they're British. Just like in the good old days. Or something.

@SRD - a sensitive and very well written piece. You could make the case that media studies, far from it's 90's caricature as a subject for idiots, is now the most important subject that can be taught in schools.

I don’t mind people being skeptical. But why be skeptical about information from a scientific source but swallow everything hook line and sinker from David Icke?

Specific skepticism is almost a definition of something in this post modern world

@morningsider I tend to agree, which is why I am disappointed that what I have seen of the S4 curriculum during lockdown/homeschooling seems to be totally focussed on film. no focus on news media or newspapers.

'Herd immunity' is a poorly-named concept. Would be more correct to say 'non-accelerating infection rate of population immunity'? (by parallel with about the only thing I remember of textbook economics)

“non-accelerating infection rate of population immunity”

    Catchy!

Certainly “herd immunity’ never seemed like a useful phrase.

Whether it’s good/bad/possible/relevant is likely to be debated for some time.

Police presence on the meadows pretty mssive.

I guess "herd immunity" is about putting blocks in networks of connections. But vaccinating the older population leaves a whole network without those blocks

Lamp posts on Meadows have signs suggesting it is illegal to consume alcohol there. Fines available. Will get picture at some point. Big corex print run in style of SfP.

Is that true? Has it always been illegal to drink on the Meadows, or is this a recent thing?

Have we become so uncivilised we can’t even enjoy a beer in a park anymore?

Disappointed by the over reaction to some youths being youths. Especially that council poster. I know the current council leader hails from the West but this is not Glasgow, we are supposed to be tolerant in this city.

@neddie - Reading this Daily Record article from January, it seems to be new, and Covid-related.

I think there are some areas where drinking in public wasn't allowed even before this year (Hunter Square is one), but I don't think the Meadows was one of them.

    When any breath
    might carry death
    It seems quite fair
    to ask for care
    The drunkard's shouts
    the spit of louts
    Without their drink
    they might just think

    Probably referring to England.

    But...

Leading scientists warned last night that the government was risking a third wave of Covid-19 by easing the lockdown at a time when official data still shows virus hotspots across many parts of the country.

@neddie - the poster has a reference to the Coronavirus legislation in smaller text at the bottom, it's related to that. I was at The Meadows today and there was a huge police presence - I counted at least 8 officers patrolling. Apparently they've been asking even couples having a drink outside to pour it out and stop. Little bit heavy handed maybe but status quo can't continue with the large groups of youths so perhaps a zero tolerance policy short term is useful.

@chdot, not just England, though we don't "open up" for another fortnight...

"While the average number of cases per 100,000 people is 30.7 across the whole UK, 28 local authority areas have at least double that number, with five – Wakefield, Barnsley, Mansfield, Corby and Clackmannanshire – recording at least three times as many."

A scientist who advised Boris Johnson against introducing a lockdown last autumn was bankrolled by a billionaire Tory donor, openDemocracy can reveal today.

Johnson’s apparent U-turn decision to not impose lockdown, which experts say may have resulted in an estimated 1.3 million extra COVID infections, came just 24 hours after meeting with Oxford epidemiologist Sunetra Gupta.

forgot to mention earlier - all those signs that laidback reported on NMW were lying on the ground this morning - the 'alcohol is banned' ones.

however, near melville drive and again just off the junction with MMW, i noticed that the 'share the space nicely' ones were still upright...
