Senior government officials have raised “urgent” concerns about the mass expansion of rapid coronavirus testing, estimating that as few as 2% to 10% of positive results may be accurate in places with low Covid rates, such as London.

Boris Johnson last week urged everyone in England to take two rapid-turnaround tests a week in the biggest expansion of the multibillion-pound testing programme to date.

However, leaked emails seen by the Guardian show that senior officials are now considering scaling back the widespread testing of people without symptoms, due to a growing number of false positives.

SCOTS are being urged to plan ahead and consider alternative walking routes when out and about this weekend - as Scotland's national parks anticipate heavy traffic to the country's beauty spots.

Just because you're allowed to drive further today, doesn't mean it's a good day to try. Huge (barely moving) queue trying to leave Edinburgh.

Why not go for a walk instead?

The Covid-19 lockdown has produced the quietest year for the world’s oceans in recent memory, according to a group of scientists working on a global map of underwater soundscapes.

Noise pollution from ship engines, trawling activities, oil platforms, subsea mining and other human sources declined significantly last spring, say the researchers, who are part of a collaborative network of 231 non-military hydrophones.

They believe the relative hush can provide valuable comparative data for an unplanned experiment in how sound affects whales, coral and other marine species.

@steveo, sounds like a plan. I'm way too busy with work ATM to do more than contemplate trips. Maybe later next month...

The problem with all of these "activities" like "dancing round your living room" is you need to make time to do them. Which means they don't get done, or quickly fall by the wayside.

Activity needs to be *built into everyday life* for people (population wide) to actually do it.

Trouble is, everything is working against that, and it's getting worse - people aren't even walking round the shops anymore, or walking to work, or even walking around the office to talk to people! Many more people are now sat at home working, ordering everything online, etc.

Just back from dropping mini nobrakes at Cambridge. I thought I might get arrested for, erm, wearing a mask. It was like the Royal Mile during the festival. The only people wearing masks were the students and uni staff, and most of them were staying indoors.

On a better note, it was great to see so many bikes. Electric scooters are taking off now too. As a pedestrian you need to keep your wits about you.

    Cambridge pretty flat!
Definitely correlation between flatness and number of cyclists
Doesn’t mean more vertically challenged cities shouldn’t try their best

@jss: Definitely correlation between flatness and number of cyclists

When I was at Cambridge a contributory factor in the popularity of cycling was that the colleges had very strict rules about students having cars. You had to have a pretty good reason to need one in order to be granted a permit, and students found to be keeping a car in town without a permit would be hauled up in front of the proctors. I doubt the regime is significantly more liberal forty years later, what with the growth in both the student population and the city as a whole.

Boy's class to self isolate for a week after a +ve test of someone in class on Weds - only told us yesterday, so 30 kids mixing for 2 days after the +ve.

Test and trace have called and booking his test just now.

How does a 6 year old self isolate in the house? Simple answer is they can't so I guess if he has/gets it we all will.

At least we've both had our first dose of vaccine.
