Though the case-rate figures are most certainly not good everywhere (that I've checked - Glasgow, Stirling, Aberdeen, Borders, East Lothian, various others) seems to be showing a big spike on 21st June. This might indicate a data processing issue (such a number of positive tests with indeterminate specimen dates that got allocated to Monday's figures).

We'll see in the next few days whether that's the case.

    "without any intervention."

The only reason before for intervention was to protect the NHS from being overwhelmed.

Fair to say I've not being looking at the hospital admission rates recently, but if those rates continue to be low (given age range of infections and vaccine protection) there will be no intervention.

There is quite a lot of targetted work going on, including targetted testing.

In the Edinburgh area, the cases have been going up steeply for a couple of weeks. The modellers have predicted very high levels here. Overall in the country, it is clear that younger folks dominate the case numbers.

Let's hope the vaccines do hold out, because it is clearly difficult now (politically) to impose stronger restrictions.

@Baldcyclist: Hospital admissions still a lot lower than January

(PHS only gives hospital admissions numbers for Scotland as a whole)

@MediumDave: The trends tab on the PHS web site is showing 77 cases for City of Edinburgh yesterday, vs 509 on Monday. Granted the data for yesterday may be incomplete but it does make the Monday figure look a bit unlikely.

UK records highest daily rise in Covid cases since February

The UK today recorded 18,270 new coronavirus infections – the highest daily rise since 5 February – and 23 deaths.

It comes after there were 15,810 new cases reported yesterday.

Cases have been rising in Britain for the last month but vaccinations appear to have kept the daily death toll at around 20 or lower, reports Reuters.

83.7% of adults have now had a first dose of the vaccine, while 61.2% have had two doses.

Delta Covid variant may be edging race against vaccines

    ---

The calls for caution come at a time when research in Australia indicates just how easily the Delta variant can potentially spread. Based on CCTV footage, health officials suspect it has been transmitted in “scarily fleeting” encounters of roughly five to 10 seconds between people walking past each other in an indoor shopping area in Sydney in at least two instances.

This post on another forum I read provides a perspective from the point of view of brave, dedicated heroes poor overworked sods who are having to deal with the current situation:

My response to a third wave? Fed up to the back teeth with it. Fed up with dealing with it. Totally fed up with the feckless <rule 2>ing idiots that are feeding it.

First day back today after having the weekend off, middle aged patient with covid has called 999 cos they feel a bit sh1t. Everyone in the house is covid positive. We enter to the sound of coughing:

"could you pop masks on for us please?"

    'We don't have any masks'

(a year and a half into a pandemic and they don't have masks???)

"Do you not normally wear masks?"

    'We don't believe in them'

(Really? this is the second ambulance they've called in a week. They all have covid but they don't believe in masks???)

Later that day. Reception at A&E. Sign says 11 hours 42 minute wait time. Angry young man (who looks the picture of health) is shouting about being kept waiting. Apparently "IT'S A TOTAL <RULE 2>ING DISGRACE". The room is crowded, spittle is flying and he's not wearing a mask. The likelihood that the reason he's being kept waiting is closely related to the behaviour of people like him seems to have entirely passed him by.

Fast forward to now. I'm having a beer and I'm contemplating if stupidity should be recognised as the main disease vector for covid. So sick of this sh1t.

Wot, like not noticing a CCTV camera where you work before ’interacting’ with a colleague??

Prof Bauld said that while sporting fixtures might have played a role, other events such as weddings and funerals could be equally culpable.
She explained: "I think Edinburgh is just seeing a rise now versus two weeks ago, versus a week from now.
"And I'm not sure we can point the finger at tourists.
"I just think it's a timing thing - cases are rising exponentially now in Edinburgh, but it was previously Glasgow and Dundee. So I don't think Edinburgh is unique."

"According to the latest ONS infection survey figures, Scotland is believed to have the highest Covid rate in the UK, with estimated levels in the Scottish population 73% higher than in England, triple those in Wales and more than four times higher than those in Northern Ireland."

Prof Leitch says it's because there is less imunity in community in Scotland from previous waves, ergo everyone is getting it at some point.

Confess I've been on AL over last week and been out and about in areas badly affected, Angus/Dundee/East lothian, better go and do a test.

More to the point from that:

"Six Scottish health boards are among the top 10 worst-hit regions in Europe, according to World Health Organization (WHO) figures.

NHS Tayside has the highest rate, with 1,146 cases per 100,000 people.

Lothian, Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Fife Lanarkshire and Ayrshire and Arran health boards are also in the top 10, along with north-east and north-west England.

The only areas in the table outside the UK are Nur-Sultan City in Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation's capital, Moscow."

Really quite shocking. Lothians in 2nd place.

Yes, Scotland has lower antibody prevalance (on latest data, 79% vs 85-89% rUK) but IMO this is down to an initially slower vaccination program and still much slower/lower rates in high-risk cities compared to other areas, so somewhat disingenuous of Dr Leitch

Remarkably little introspection from the usual suspects of the Scottish body politic who had much to say before

We're never getting out of this in a sensible manner, we're heading for heard immunity in all but name. Between people ignoring advice/instructions, officials ignoring or reacting to slowly to "the science" and other ministers complaining eventually the govt are going to throw their hands up and say to hell with it, do as you please.

Might as well just done this in the first place.

The danger of a "herd immunity" strategy is the rise of new variants.

New variant incoming (already reached the UK). Possibly more able to evade vaccines and antibodies?

Only postponed? Pity. Would have preferred to read "cancelled in perpetuity" there.
