Russian president Vladimir Putin urged Russians to show “responsibility” by getting vaccinated as he ordered a week-long workplace shutdown.

@Baldcyclist, the context to discussion "here" last month was about vaccinations because the UK dragged its heels on vaccinating teenagers, compared to most other countries in "the West". This was particularly a problem in Scotland, where state schools went back in mid-August.

The Covid wave in Scotland wasn't just caused by schools returning, as cases were already rising late July/early August. However unvaccinated kids mixing turbocharged the wave, which peaked about a month later. Schools in England go back in September, infections have been rising since then and are yet to peak. Maybe not be the same rate of infection yet as Scotland had last month, but the sheer number of infections is a problem in itself.

Purely anecdotal observations of compliance with guidance/rules on public transport based on a rare bus trip, off-peak, into town and back.

Pretty good compliance with mask wearing upstairs on the number 11, just some youngish kids (who I believe aren't required to wear a face covering anyway - the parents were) and one adult who could, of course, have been exempt. Social distancing not so great: it did get more difficult as the bus filled up but some folks didn't seem to even bother trying, plonking themselves down on the first available empty pair of seats close to the stairs rather than taking the few steps required to access the relatively more wide open spaces further back.

The number 4 coming back out was another matter. Mask wearing: very patchy. A group of lads boarded wearing masks, but they came off as soon as they got upstairs and started tucking in to the maxi-pack of doughnuts they'd brought with them. Social distancing: forget it. Having opted to move away from one guy who sat right behind me and proceeded to cough into the back of my neck (albeit through his mask), at the next stop someone else came and sat right in front of me (again, there was enough room further back for him to have chosen a safer space), pulled his mask down and continued his earbud-enabled phone call for the whole of the rest of his journey.

On both journeys there were a number of folks who didn't seem to be able to wear their masks properly. I know some people complain about their glasses steaming up but (a) most of the mouth-only mask wearers I see don't seem to be spectacle wearers, and (b) I wear specs and manage fine with full coverage.

One might speculate that the difference between the two journeys could have had something to do with the neighbourhoods traversed: Comiston, Morningside & Bruntsfield for the 11; Slateford and Oxgangs for the 4. I couldn't possibly comment.

Looking forward to my booster jab soon, fingers crossed.

Just remembered why I hate the bus and have not missed it this year!

Schools in England hit by high numbers of Covid-19 cases among staff and pupils have been forced to reinstate mask wearing, send whole year groups home to study online and in some cases close early for half-term as the pandemic continues to wreak havoc in education.

Covid infections in Germany rise sharply

Covid infections in Germany have risen sharply again, with 23,543 new cases reported within one day.

The nationwide seven-day incidence also increased significantly, with the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) saying on Sunday the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants now stands at 191.5.

Meanwhile, the UK is running at more than twice that rate, with Scotland at ~1.8 times (vs the September peak here of more than four times the latest German number).

A week on from our 24 hours in Amsterdam I see NL is going back into partial lockdown.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-59258409

The catering industry has reacted angrily to the news; a spokesman told public broadcaster NOS the government had "crossed a line". Last weekend, thousands of protesters marched through The Hague in anger at existing Covid restrictions.

Latest daily figures on Saturday showed 13,902 new Covid cases - the third-highest daily rate since the start of the pandemic - and 33 deaths.

In Scotland 3,077 new cases of COVID-19 reported.
1 in 85 people living in private residential households had coronavirus

Test & Protect app notification for both of us last night.

Just been to NHS Walk In campervans set up in Keir St car park behind Art College for PCR test. (Also one beside canal at Leamington Bridge now.)

App link takes you to form that aks if you have been anywhere other than UK in last 14 days. Netherlands was lower risk 10 days ago but of course higher now.

PCR result will be tomorrow which means regular dental appointment shifted. Next is Feb but may get cancellation.

Took lateral flow tests yesterday and we were clear.

It is always interesting to hear Mr fimm comparing European and British/Scottish cases etc - as most will know he's Austrian and bilingual in English and German so he reads German-language news online. His opinion seems to be that all governments are having problems/not making the best decisions all the time.
I understand they've got more of a problem with vaccine hesitancy in Austria than we have here, too.

"Took lateral flow tests yesterday and we were clear."

Wouldn't put too much faith in LFDs - as a experiment, I continued using them even after a positive PCR and it was 2 days after doing the PCR that I first had a positive LFD result.

    Test date: 18 November 2021

Your coronavirus PCR test (or other lab test) result is negative. It’s likely you did not have the virus when the test was done.

So result back inside 24 hours so happy. Plus Mrs LB can now meet ex work associates training in from Airdrie.

Yes. Scotland and Austria have similar sized populations (for the purposes of this discussion, anyway). Scotland had 3000 new cases yesterday. Austria had 15000, I think mr fimm said.
It looks like we chose a good time to go! We are both glad we didn't wait until Christmas.
