Mask compliance was very good on my train from KIngs Cross. people took off masks to eat, but put them back on.

maybe risk feels more on a long ride?

@SRD, most passengers seemed to be heading up to Aberdeen, the journey's not that short.

There were a few folk who appeared to have not long got off a flight at Edinburgh Airport, so maybe thought as they've had all the tests, etc. that they needn't worry so much. Possibly not realising that they could still be spreading the virus if there were recently infected people on their flight...

Ah well, the train back in the evening is usually a little quieter.

On a more hopeful note, the evening train was not only fairly quiet but everyone was masked up throughout.

Maybe there's a social "ripple effect" at work here. If everyone is masked, they stay masked; if a few unmask and "get away with it", others are emboldened to follow their example?

    @crowriver

Trolley service seen in the wild on both the West Highland Line last Sunday (Tyndrum Lower->Glasgow) and a few weeks earlier on the Pitlochry intercity service.

Not common though. Presumably staffing issues and/or the strike at RailGourmet are at the root of this rather than any decision not to send out the trolleys.

@MediumDave, no such shenanigans on the east coast services. The HST sets have an actual buffet car, but my journeys over the past year have been as yet undisturbed by the traditional announcements of the delights the buffet has to offer. No trolley on the evening 170 either. Not that I'm complaining - I only rarely make use of the onboard catering anyhow.

As you say staffing issues the most likely explanation. Abelio franchise coming to an end anyway so they clearly have no incentive to resolve this in any case.

Covid is having a bigger effect on staffing issues than anything Abellio can or won't do.

Sadly, due to updated guidance on coronavirus by the Scottish Govt, we have no option but to cancel all 4 Santa Express trips around the Fife Circle tomorrow & 18 December. We know how disappointing this will be, but the health & well-being of everyone is our priority.

Having been on various work trips which have involved my visiting computers in very well ventilated rooms over the last year, I found my self on the train to Manchester at the beginning of November and again at the end of December.

While in November mask compliance at the english end was very low, I think about 2 in 10 people were wearing masks while in Decemeber almost everyone was wearing masks.

Scotland to roll out booster jabs to people aged 30-39 from next week
Coronavirus booster vaccines are to be made available to people aged 30-39 in Scotland from Monday and to 18-29-year-olds from later in the week, health secretary Humza Yousaf has said.

    Writing on Twitter, Yousaf said:

From tomorrow (Mon 13th) you can book your Booster if you’re aged 30-39.
We intend on opening portal to 18-29yr olds later in the week, details to follow.
We know just how important a tool vaccination, and in particular the Booster is in our fight against the virus.

A reminder, to be eligible 12 weeks must have elapsed between your 2nd dose and Booster.

Still no second doses for 12-15 year olds? No vaccine for under 12s?

16 year old got second dose at Ocean Terminal on Saturday. Had to queue for over an hour. Goodness knows what the queues will be like at clinics this coming week...

Tried to book my booster, looks like the left hand still doesn't know what the right is doing because the website has no option for 30-39 yet and the phone line says it's the 14th not the 13th.

I have had a bit of cold since Thursday/Friday. I was getting better on Saturday and went for a wee ride with @ediburgh87 on Sunday morning, came home, went to the shops and just before I was planning to lay down, eat my Portuguese tarts and drink tea, I went do a LFT just in case. It's nothing I thought. Well the test came out positive. Mr Bill did his and it was negative. I booked a PCR test for Mr Bill and I for 30min later at the Napier Campus in Craighlockart. 30min door-to-door trip. I took another LFT when I got back, just to check, and it was still positive. I was impressed that we could get a test so close and soon on a Sunday evening.

Mr Bill got his result in about 20h -- negative. I got mine in about 24h and it is positive.

I have no idea where I could pick it up as the only places I visited last week was work (most days), post-office on Tue and home.

Mr Bill got his booster a week ago, maybe not enough for its full effectiveness but I am really glad he didn't catch it from me.

Really wish I had taken the test earlier and potentially stop spreading it further. It still feels like a cold and let's hope it stays that way. They don't tell you in the results which variant you have.

People who have cold-like symptoms in London are more likely to have Covid than a cold, according to the scientist behind the Zoe coronavirus symptom tracker app.

Prof Tim Spector told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that most of the symptoms of Omicron were the same as those of a common cold, including headaches, sore throat, runny nose, fatigue and sneezing.

Spector urged people with cold symptoms – and not just the classic Covid symptoms – to take a test. “Things like fever, cough and loss of smell are now in the minority of symptoms we are seeing,” he said. “Most people don’t have classic symptoms.”

Could it be that the PM is instilling a 'blitz spirit' in England to deflect from his own woeful performance?

Getting strong vibes of 'boosters on thrust' against Omicron and his own political survival being knitted together frantically.
"Save yourself from Omicron and save my job at same time". Appeals to self interest which he knows a lot about.

This strategy will have little traction in the rUK though hardly matters as most media isn't here.

Just back from sortie to port at Heysham and noticed less 'worry' about using masks or not.

I think this might have been posted on here already but your post reminded me of it and I can't see that it hurts linking to it again: Let’s not pretend the anti-mask babies would have lasted a minute in the blitz

Around 70,000 Britons died in second world war bombing raids, most of them in the blitz, while 145,000 have thus far perished from Covid. Yet somehow there does seem to be a large intersection between the Venn diagram sets “People who bang on endlessly about WW2” and “People who cannot cope with having to take a relatively minor public health measure for the greater good”.

Quite impressed that mini-Morningsider's maths teacher took the time to explain exponential growth to his class yesterday, using the actual covid stats and projecting forward over the next few days. Not a lesson he will forget in a hurry by the sound of things.

    @Morningsider that is good.

Got me thinking of the irrelevant theoretical meanderings that my maths teacher used to use for "examples" in High School. Quite turned me (and many others) off maths as a waste of time.

Nice that at least one teacher is using something real!

ObCovid: as the weather was nice had a cheeky ride out to Ingliston at lunchtime to try my luck at the booster drop in. Success! In and out in about 25 minutes. Encountered a bloke fixing a puncture by the side of the A8 near the airport roundabout. He was sorted for parts and tools so I bid him good day.

Little underwhelmed by restrictions just now. Boys birthday party this Sunday has been booked and paid for, for months.

Bad idea to have it now, but govt says it's legaly within rules even if they want people not to mix. in fact venue texted us minutes after FM update to tell us rules still allowed the event.

So we're now between a rock and a hard place, if we cancel the party that's a couple hundred quid down the swanny (and of course one devastated wee boy), but if the Govt cancels we will get our money back.
