    Now there’s a dilemma

    But

Frost and earth freezing are 2 different things

IMO earth won’t freeze at depth you will be planting

Strike while the sun is warm

(Will potatoes be ready to eat before ‘emergency’ is over?)

I put in potatoes two weeks ago--they were chitting for freedom.
I don't think they'll make it, as there's no sign of green and i haven't gotten around to building a cold frame. (it's on my COVID to do list)

today's frost has me worried about the autumn crocuses that I moved yesterday.

Given the number of tatties that sprout in the spring from your last year's potatoes, they're not that bothered by the frost if they're deep enough down. The tubers themselves are pretty hardy but any green shoots poking up will get nipped so you just need to earth them up if a frost is forecast.

It's an iron law in gardening that shoots only ever appear after you have given up on them so yours should be coming up soon @canuck

Potatoes originate in the Andes. First ever food to be freeze dried. Suspect they'd survive the hard vacuum of space.

The last few weeks have been a first for many things. But a Tory Govt seemingly willing to rip up it's rule book, and on the face of it properly support the country.

Other news, Indy2 was paused yesterday. If Govt delivers on it's promises of support it will be sunk.

Latest spike in Scotland is Glasgow it seems. Shetland is of course very worrying.

Calls in Italy to ban "outdoor activities" reg. running, sports, cycling, going for a walk, unless for "essential" purposes.

I'd better get down the allotment before they ban cycling and "non-essential" walking here...

Also: get those solo rides in quick before full lockdown comes in...

Each country seems to follow the same pattern in Europe, work from home if you can, avoid pubs, shut pubs, ban football, ban cycling, total lockdown, We are not able to go straight to lockdown like Hong Kong

@gembo - Have you got a link for the medic?

Golf, walking, gardening and cycling the only safe activities left.

@crowriver - that kind of exercise is "essential" for keeping people healthy. A bunch of obese, muscleless telly watchers are going to have less resistance, not to mention the depression that goes with inactivity.

I actually don't know how I'll cope mentally if I can't get outside for 3 months. Not well, I'm afraid.

@gembo - It seems crazy. I use my cycle to shop, let alone the pootle to see the spring flowers.

I sterilised my cycling gloves by soaking them in detergent and water then putting them in the microwave for a couple of minutes.

tesco in Hermiston looked like soviet union, loads of empty shelves.
I also noticed many single occupancy buses.

Does any one know what this key worker status entails? Does it mean two for one deal in weatherpersons, or does it mean no leave or something?

I am guessing its going to be good for cycling over the next few days as roads are so quiet.

If look at other countries I suppose there may be restrictions fairly soon.
