@laidback, will we be able to reset society after the pandemic? For me this is crucial as unlikely to be the last SARS pandemic coming out of China. JG Ballard missed this one. But Lucy Ellman mentions H5N1 in first few pages of DUCKS, NEWBURYPORT my copy came from library the other week. Could easily be infectious? Anyway 1080 pages long. I imagine they wont be asking for it back. (H5N1 is avian but she was close)

China and related nations imposed martial law.
Full martial law rather than the partial version in force normally? Very hard to do anything without regular practice beforehand - includes giving and following orders promptly? Bit of a culture shock for all concerned and we must remember that this is a government which believes government itself is harmful but who also don't want to die themselves?

@iwrats
i have no idea what or who is behind this
Posted 5 years ago # -
@Murun Buchstansang - Yeah I saw that today. I've never seen anything like it.
Neighbour has texted me saying she has the symptoms. That brings it close to home, though I haven't actually seen her for months.

@gembo - Everything. Is. Utterly. Changed.
@bax - Our contact in London was saying read and watch the associated videos on this.

We’re about to see a disaster the likes of which we haven’t seen in this country in our lifetime and the local Tories are still arguing about free parking.

“local Tories are still arguing about free parking”
Beats arguing with local Coop staff about ‘panic buying’.
“We’ve had a bad day.”
(And they are not wearing masks.)
Posted 5 years ago # -
I don't even know where you'd get a mask. Haven't been able to get hand sanitiser or a thermometer here for two weeks. (I am keen to obtain both for my mum.)
Posted 5 years ago # -
@unhurt: Leith Gin now producing hand sanitiser, could give them a go:

On amazon can get all 3, although overpriced.

“
Despite the owners not following government orders, a police spokesman said officers are unable to force pub closures as there are currently “no powers” to do so as of yet.

People on Twitter tweeting “DO NOT PANIC BUY” then literally in the same tweet posting a picture of 5 days worth of homemade chilli con carne to be frozen.
This literally *is* what panic buying looks like
When everyone does this, this why the meat* aisles are empty
*Substitute product of choice

Not excusing ‘panic buying’ even less abuse of staff trying to stop excesses, but -
This is part of the problem of mixed messages.
(Almost) everything shut except food shops. People told to reduce travel - buying more and less often makes sense.
More crucially there’s supposed to be “social distancing”. Which shops are making sure people in checkouts queues are two metres apart?
Any shop stuff wearing masks? I’m aware that these are far from 100% effective, but it’s likely to be that some of the panicking shoppers will have CV - some will know they have symptoms.
Desperate times.
Near impossible logistics, but everything should now be home delivered.
Posted 5 years ago # -
Pretty much still if you get up at crack of dawn (though some stores reserving for the elderly) no queues.
A and E now seems to be for actual accidents and emergencies from what I hear - the non A and E patients are staying away and presumably the Coronavirusers are staying away

I bought all my bogroll, pasta and rice and flour in advance of any stock crises. We've had a cupboard containing more tins than usual since this time last year, in case of a no-deal crash-out. As the person who does the shopping (usually every other day just using the spare capacity in my normal work bags) I did have a look into getting a delivery at the start of last week (to minimise my visits to places with people in, seeing as I was still being made to go into the office then), but by then the slots were filled up until April and the booking/payment systems were unresponsive or unstable. No staff in masks that I've seen so far - Aldi checkout staff wearing gloves but they do that anyway.

@gembo Should have kept some of your previous years' spare leaves. PM me a description of the right hedge to fling it over. Could weight the bag with a tin of haricot beans so it doesn't get stuck in a tree.

@wingpig, too kind, Mine is waste ground (belongs to defunct railroad) with 1960s tipped up swing. It was proving too tempting. Only yesterday a young urchin was climbing the fence. The fence is prone to collapse, indeed I am off shortly to get some of the fence that used to continue towards the French town of Effen where the Big bee flew. By which I mean Currie but. It all fell down when a big EFFEN TREE fell over. This is for my knew hobby Chopping wood. Have chopped a whole half a mountain ash into smaller chunks. Gonna burn baby burn. First few years out in sticks was spent clearing 25 years of hedge trimming that went over the fence. The fence itself then fell over (it got burnt) then in the wasteground lots of big old tree trunks. Also burnt. I call them ny Inferno Days
Scotmid Balerno even had Pesto today, not Pasta though, chuck us some pasta and haricot I can swap for Mountain Ash. Ta muchos

from today's sunday times newspaper
At a private engagement at the end of February, Cummings outlined the government's strategy. Those present say it was "herd immunity, protect the economy, and if that means some pensioners die, too bad."
