"Toilet roll panic buying in Stockbridge."

Saw a lassie with two 16-roll packs of Andrex in her small trolley in Straiton Sainsbury's this pm.

Also, pasta shelves nearly empty, especially penne. But pasta sauce shelves directly opposite well stocked. Go figure?

No bread flour to be had either, though there was plenty of actual bread to be had.

One wonders how much of this is due to "panic buying" and how much might already be being caused by supply chain disruption of some kind. (I would also note that IME Sainsbury's does seem to have a bit of habit of running out of unexpected things for no readily apparent reason even when the country isn't teetering on the verge of an apocalypse.)

Yes, noticed poor stock updating on Monday at Snozberries Meadowbank Abbeyhill (I refuse to say Meadowbank is an actual area of Edinburgh, it's just a progressive rebranding of eastern Abbeyhill that sounds more rustic and Anglophile). Ditto Leith LiDL when I used to shop there (pre-Easter Rd LiDL), often running out of random stuff.

I put it down to supermarkets trying to cut overheads by not keeping so much stuff on site, also keeping warehouses low stock. Thus relying on "just in time:" deliveries which inevitably sometimes are well late.

No Deal Biscuits will be LOADSA FUN.

On Media Review they discuss this and the fact Covid-19 had failed to appear in Scotland till earlier this week.
Stuart Cosgrove reckoned there was a huge sigh of relief when Scotland finally had a confirmed case.
Media likes local stories and was also suspicion that tests in Scotland were not working. Edinburgh has 6th busiest airport on the island so would have expected cases earlier. Other 4 are around London and then Manchester. South of England has so many links via Eurostar and loads of ferries so not surprising so many cases are down there.
As @morningsider says Catherine Calderwood does have grip on situation as much as could be expected. I'm not convinced any government can cope if things accelerate too fast.

Wasn't going to take the boy to Judo today. Wife thinks I'm mad,so we're going anyway.
I'm not going back to my class till this is all over, she can say what she likes!

Although ironically, it's one of the things I've been using to prep for this pandemic. No panic buying here, for the last 6 week's I've been bursting myself most nights to get as fit as I can.

I'd have hoped my VO2 max was better by now, but it started very low (28 now 36). Garmin says my fitness age was 76 in Jan when I started preparing for this, now it's 60 (I'm 48, true Garmin data not representative of general population).

Goal is to get fitness age to 55 before I'm infected. The joys of being in one of the 'at risk' groups, it won't be a mild cold for me.

Lionel Shriver's dystopian novel The Mandibles has an amusing section about toilet paper on the black market and the workarounds by the very middle-class, sheltered family.

Moss is quite good substitute I believe - there's a stack in my garden.

Fairtrade coffee morning in Balerno today started quietly but about as busy as usual. We had the lord Provost, two councillors and an MSP on the smoothie bike. As well as the usual kids and mums and dads. We had to spray the grips between shots. Also 94 year old Bert was back. He now has a fairtrade tee shirt. Apparently last year i said he could get a Fietsclub Balerno top if he came back this year.

But a lifetime’s exercise could significantly slow your immune system declining with age. In 2018, a study by University of Birmingham and King’s College London found that 125 non-smoking amateur cyclists aged 55 to 79 still had the immune systems of young people.

germany: "In a press conference held this afternoon with a leading virologist from the university teaching hospital Charité in Berlin, as well as the director of the Robert Koch Institute, the leading body on public health, Spahn advised people to avoid public transport and to “go by bike or foot,” where possible, stressing that the main goal was to slow down the development of the virus to avoid over burdening Germany’s health service, which has a total of 28,000 emergency beds.

It's quite difficult not to be scared, we have a govt saying it's all fine, carry on, blitz mentallity. 'Experts' saying this is the worst virus they have ever seen. Other experts saying every health service will be saturated in weeks. EU politicians saying UK is basically doing same stuff Italy was 2 weeks ago and should roll out more draconian measures now to stop people moving. I have the fun job of making sure our services will be able to cope with a lot of extra capacity and that our staff have the kit and access they need to work at home for prolonged periods, and try to do that without panicking folks. Very soon we'll all be taking our laptops home every night.

Quite difficult not to be apprehensive of the next few weeks when you have to actively plan for the worst. Might come to nothing, though the Corona humour seems to be fading, at least in my office.

I have a mask (a decent one), it's not been dawned yet, but given public transport is the only realistic method of getting to work it might be next week.

i suspect the mask is mostly effective to stop other folk catching your viral, not vice versa, so only really works if everyone wears one.

in any event - wearing glasses would be as important as a mask. if someone sneezes on you, ocular exposure is guaranteed

Or can we expect more/worse sometime/soon?
