@Colin - yes nice having suitably distanced chat at Yester Kirk. Shame LR & AP closing but can understand when it's not meant to be business as usual.

    Camus was mentioned pages back.

"Every time “our” Prime Minister appears before the cameras he looks more like a man on the run. Or rather he resembles the narrator in Delmore Schwartz’s poem “The Heavy Bear That Goes with Me”, who is “In love with candy, anger, and sleep” and who “Howls in his sleep because the tight-rope\Trembles and shows the darkness beneath.” When Bojo made his “statesmanlike” Speech to the Nation last Monday night on BBC Scotland his lips were not synchronised to what he was saying – this to be fair was not his fault but that of the BBC. The effect was like watching a spaghetti western where the words heard from the gunslinger do not match the action of the mouth, which is the standard reality of this Tory government. In Westminster what we have is the worst of governments at the worst of times.

"The good news for Bojo and for the rest of us is that humanity has survived – just – pandemics, plagues and pests before. The will to survive, to be optimistic, seems to be one of the vital components in the common family of our DNA. "

    Visited Waitrose, Morningside early afternoon.

They were operating a one-out-one-in system at both doors with good spacing in the queue (driven by the customers I guess). The queue on the car park level was particularly well spaced with 3 or 4 metres between folk.

Guy controlling the upstairs queue was wearing an eye mask over his mouth. Kept moving it out the way to speak to people.

Quite low numbers in the shop itself so easyish to keep a bit of space about you.

At the tills they were letting one person all the way through, with the next customer not able to unpack onto the belt until the previous customer was walking away.

Not sure how well things will go at busier times. But I have no idea when busier times are any more.

For info: no toilet roll/kitchen roll/tissues. Little pasta. Virtually no flour.
    Lots of everthing else.

i must level with you, cycle commuters of edinburgh. when afflicted - sit upright, sit still, maintain focus. sit ZAZEN. allow the immediacy of the infection to happen, but do not surrender to the effects. breathe.. and you will prevail.

The precise meaning and method of zazen varies from school to school, but in general it can be regarded as a means of insight into the nature of existence.

    “no toilet roll/kitchen roll/tissues“

Seems to be the madness of panic buying

    “Little pasta”

Panic buying too - plus the impossibility of restocking from Italy.

    “Virtually no flour”

Bought by people who imagine they will make their own bread or pasta.

    (Some will.)

I can confirm that 10 days in a family with Covid-19 has not resulted in any unusual consumption of bogroll. We have made some bread though- mostly as we haven’t been to the shops for nearly 2 weeks. Fruit and veg almost out. Good news is that I now feel nearly back to normal. Wife is taking longer but also improving.

I really don’t get the bogroll stockpiling.

Drum Street eerily quiet at 7am. There was a pigeon standing in the middle of it. Utterly unimaginable, normally.

Was a bit busier by the end of the dog walk, but I still managed to cross the road without waiting for the green man.

"...aside from cargo, there is almost no passenger business," IATA boss Alexandre de Juniac, said.

Weather the BBC changed his words or not this quote says a lot about how airlines regard passengers.

Good news @nobrakes. Hope your journey to full recovery is swift. I spend a bit of time last night lying on my bed breathing deeply. Enjoying the feeling of filling my lungs to the point where you can feel the stretch. Just. Because. I. Could.

Saw that they're about to permit driving without an MOT for up to six months. Anyone else think that's a pretty reckless idea?

Well at the moment there isn’t much driving going on so the risk is pretty much reduced.

"...aside from cargo, there is almost no passenger business," IATA boss Alexandre de Juniac, said.

A surprising amount of air freight is carried in the holds of passenger flights. Some flights are continuing with virtually no passengers, just for the cargo aspect.

I once saw a wee video about the work that goes on at Turnhouse each night to strip out the seats from Jet2 planes for them to do an overnight flight with the cabin (as well as the hold) filled with cargo and then put all the seats back in in the morning.

That sounds a pretty repetitive job to me...

In accordance with Government and medical advice, the Prince and the Duchess are now self-isolating at home in Scotland.

The tests were carried out by the NHS in Aberdeenshire where they met the criteria required for testing.

I hate to say this, but if people are still panic buying toilet roll, then they *need to put the price up*.

And no, this isn't about pricing poor people out of the market, or about profiteering. It's about sending a clear signal that you only buy toilet paper now, if you absolutely need it.

The price can come down again when people get the message.

    You choose:

    Stockpile now and pay extortionate prices, or;

Buy only what you need and wait for the price to come down before getting more.

I think extending the MOT is OK, modern cars don't tend to need much maintenance.

There should be no exemptions for illegal tyres or faulty lights though.

Sadly, many people in this country think it's OK to leave headlights out until MOT time, though
