I'd been putting off getting my hair cut for ages before finally deciding to get one since my hair was getting silly long. Then the 'lockdown' was announced. Going to look like Gandalf by the time this is over...

I am writing to you from Italy, which means I am writing from your future. We are now where you will be in a few days. The epidemic’s charts show us all entwined in a parallel dance.

I have a question about China: AIUI (last I heard) they are in the process of easing their lockdown having not had any deaths for a number of days. However, given that there is no "cure" (debate about chloroquine etc aside) and no vaccine, what steps are they taking to control the risk of the thing breaking out again? (I note just now that cinemas in China are being closed again.)

Apologies if there is good information about this readily available but I'm afraid I'm currently trying to distance myself from anything but clear, direct advice. Life is stressful enough as it is without trying to work out what's reliable information and what isn't from the miasma of rumour and to-and-fro articles in the media (both conventional and social).

One reason I ask is because a number of people do seem to be speaking about this all being over within three weeks, because that's what Boris said on Monday. I suspect it'll be more like three months before we're anywhere near the key restrictions being lifted. Whatever the timescale, I would hope that lessons should be being learned from other places where they are/will be going through that process before us.

Whatever you think of the leadership of the UK and Scottish Governments:

"A Los Angeles boy who is believed to be the first teenager in the United States to die from complications due to Covid-19 was denied treatment at an urgent care clinic because he didn’t have health insurance."

    By email -

Dear Walkers & off road cyclists,

Paths including Core Paths and Rights of Way which pass through working areas of farms may be closed to allow farm workers to self isolate during this Covid-19 crisis.

The Fife Council Access Officer is liaising with the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) for guidance.

@CycleAlex, myself and son got haircuts about two weeks ago, in anticipation that things would start closing down.

If you have some hair clippers, just do No.1 all over, US Marine style? Or if you have a Bic razor, go further and travel the smooth skinhead route?

But while Johnson said he would be able to continue to run the government’s response to the crisis alone in his Downing Street flat, public health experts rounded on his attitude to the infection and accused him of being “nonchalant” and “slow” to behave appropriately.

The prime minister has previously been accused of failing to keep an appropriate distance from other senior figures in public, and has continued with parliamentary duties this week, raising the possibility that he may have infected others in the cabinet and beyond.

Piece about Chief Medical Officer, Catherine Calderwood, a good person to have at this time I think.

@laidback right now there are wards full of patients in scotland with coronavirus and they are not being given respiratory aid. "the situation is scary". these are not my words, but the words of a nurse i know. so you know where you can stick that fluff piece.

@bax I don't think the info about Calderwood breaks any of the forum's rules.

    On the main question...
People are not being given respiratory aid as there are no respirators available?

I don't doubt her credentials, however all they are doing is repeating the advice of their southern counterparts. This is being managed from London.

The early poor advice, and also the better advice following the U turn, has been repeated more eloquently, but basically word for word.

Respirators and ventilators may both be in short supply, but I understand that without trained staff the latter aren't very useful. Manufacturing sophisticated medical kit quickly is probably still easier than training up staff to use it quickly.

its hard for me to be much clearer without breaking confidences. anecdotally males outnumber females 12 to 1 and the elderly are merely being given tlc. regardless of current resources, this is no time to be bigging up anyone in positions of authority, we should be challenging and holding them to account.

everyone knows the current situation in theory. my lungs are damaged from this, but at least i can still breathe freely.

you want an experiment? ok, so imagine you're a bit more worse for wear.

try calling 111. see how long it takes for the call to be answered... but you wont get that far. now bear in mind that local GP surgeries are refusing to handle anything that remotely resembles coronavirus symptoms. they might wish you good luck.

we are on our own on this, and by we, i mean all of us.
