Glad to hear that one Tesco has got its act together in recent days.

    Hope they all have.

“but then the lack of farm labour to pick produce will start to bite in earnest and fresh fruit and veg might become genuinely scarce”

    I’m marginally sceptical about this.

Obviously ‘labour from Europe’ was already a post Brexit/pre CV problem. ‘Now’ there are 10s of 1,000s of under/unemployed people.

If masses of people are willing to volunteer to help the NHS, I’m sure enough might for farm labouring.

If not, I expect agricultural conscription is hidden somewhere in the emergency legislation.

"is overtaking allowed, or do you just have to shamble along slowly until you finally get to the booze aisles?"

Lots of people were u-turning actually, unless 'boxed in'. Really was quite well adhered to in the main

Was before 10am but the booze aisle wasn't taped off. Didn't have the face to ask the staff (from 2+m away) if licensing laws had been relaxed. I'm, like, not that desperate.

    Yet.

I went an errand by bicycle for one of my adoptees yesterday. When I returned their bank card they told me why they were in the specially vulnerable category - a very serious, maybe life-limiting, illness I did not know about.

I could not hug them, could not have a cup of tea with them and now I'm left wondering about what happens to them now. We have both been robbed of part of our humanity by this thing. The idea they have to face this in any way alone is barely tolerable.

Yes, tallies with my experience. Although I'll admit I used the app once last week when feeling some very mild symptoms noted upthread, but didn't return to it as the symptoms listed in the app were limited to fever (no), persistent cough (not really), diarrhea (happened once, but not current) and so on, so I didn't feel able to report them as my current condition. I see they've updated the app to include some of those things now.

There was a question on R2 at 12 last week from a woman who's mother was dying of MND, the advice was to hell with the virus, they're going to die soon of something pretty miserable sooner or later be with your mother.

Obviously this isn't directly applicable but maybe the sentiment stands.

Further update on my experience of symptoms:

This thing has a long tail. Head stuff (nasal irritation etc) has improved to a greater degree. Some smell back but it's weak and I still get a lingering iron smell (inflammation?) that was predominant throughout the bad patch.

Breathing felt good and cough much reduced yesterday so I went out for a run. That wasn't good - after a km or so I could fell my lungs weren't cooperating. Felt constricted as though I couldn't fully expand and take deep breaths. Kept going for a few more km, but it was harder work than normal, and my feet started feeling numb (which usually only happens to me at the end of some very vigorous anaerobic efforts).

No coughing or anything as a result, although had a bit of a disturbed night sleep as I had some mucus at the back of my nose/throat constantly catching and trying to make me cough. That was improved by drinking more water and lying on my front.

That's something like 20 days in now.

Yes I had a very mild shortness of breath last night (day 14) and as there is no testing I do not know if the thing is Coronavirus or something else. But taking it easy and as with Sergei Bubka pole vau;t records I am increasing my Skipping record by a skip a day - so now record is 41 skips before the line breaks. And the monkey gets choked.

It will be interesting to have the city back for the summer. Could well be an eye-opener.

@IwratS - Cups of tea can be applied in inventive ways. Acts of mercy may involve risk, but shouldn't cease, it's just a case of managing the risk.

Vulnerable folk have been left isolated and without help - sometimes it is necessary to enter their home to help, appropriately managing the risk.

For example - sole elderly carer with partner who has dementia. Partner damaged the lock to their food store.

Visually impaired person with new washing machine - tactile nobbly bits needed to be installed so that clothes washing could continue.

Person with hemiplegia has had personal care company pull out, so weekly cleaning visit required.

All could be argued to be left isolated, but the mental wellbeing aspects of having these tasks completed are not to be understated.

Possibly your adoptee may be open to negotiated risk taking.

Symptoms are a difficult measure, I'm sure most of the country is experiencing whatever the latest symptom being described on the BBC website is.

In some respects being asthmatic is lucky (not so if I contract the virus I guess), I have a peak flow meter. So whatever phantom symptoms I'm experiencing, headache, shortness of breath, cough, warm head, my consistant 480-500 daily peak flow reading is keeping me sane.

If/once that starts to fall, I'll know I'm in trouble.

Other useful data, if you wear a sports watch that measures stress and heart rate, you can quite clearly see the correlation with illness / stress / higher hr in those daily numbers.

In other news, the gracious annopuncement that our institution is giving everyone two days extra annual leave over easter (Oh, what to do?...), left some in my team wondering if it was an April fools.

Yeah, I've noticed a few colds coming on before I start to really feel the effects just from monitoring my stress on Garmin, obviously need to kind of calibrate it based on how stressful the period has actually been.

I never get stressed on farming, thats the farmers responsibility. "Are you the Farmer?"

You do need to be mindful of your stresses, if I'm busy at work or with the kids then it causes a short term spike on the graph if I spend the entire day stressed then I know whats caused that! When I'm coming down with something its usually a consistently raised HR over the day and even when sleeping my HR might not get down to "resting".

Yep, you can usually tell the difference from normall daily stress. This was my last bout of secondary pnemonia from a viral infection in Dec, normally that graph is full of blue.

For 10 days it was like that. Alongside the resting heart rate of 90 you get a fairly good indication from the data. Of course when you're as ill as that you don't need a watch to tell you, but it is interesting all the same.

Not just the Fringe, ALL Edinburgh festivals, Tattoo etc. are cancelled.

Right thing to do. Sad for performers, audiences, venues, bars, restaurants. OTOH AirBnB landlords, hotels will face a reset and over tourism is probably over for the foreseeable.

2021 festivals likely to be much more local affairs - could be interesting.
