Never thought an alumni of Glasgow University could be so daft. Oh wait, I never thought that until I started my undergrad studies there in Oct 1983 and had my callow eyes open by the bogs in the 4th floor of the library being covered in Sectarian graffiti from both rangers and Celtic fans. And one funny if still sectarian joke - went like this - I have come to Glasgow University to escape sectarian bigotry and I am appalled at this disgusting graffiti. So cut it pout you orange bar stewards.
Sun was out their boiling. Cutting grass now, quite dry.

No sunshine on Leith (neither Abbeyhill) as yet. A stubborn grey cloud hovering overhead, with only occasional rays of golden light peeking through.

David Clegg @davieclegg
Catherine Calderwood admits she was also at her Fife holiday home last weekend with her husband, which exposes the Scottish Government quote last night as stuff and nonsense.---
Sheer arrogance and hypocrisy. She'll have to go, the sooner the better.
Also:

Chris Deerin @chrisdeerin
that Catherine Calderwood ‘stay home’ ad has been on twice in the past 10 minutes. Everyone in this house laughing at it---

It's difficult - she'll be a useful asset in advising the Govt and not sure how easily replaceable her contribution would be. I also would question the holier-than-thou sanctimony of the S*n given its track record.
Lastly just as an observation, as admin of the residents' Facebook page for a Midlothian town the amount of finger pointing posts I have to review (and generally decline) for perceived transgressions by other townsfolk of the new rules has been eye-opening (including incredulity at people cycling past them on the railway distances below the 2m specified). Valid (and IMO well balanced) though these lockdown rules may be, I DO worry about the mid-term effects on societal cohesion and intra-community relations..

@bax
Social class (maintaining, hiding, expressing, climbing) is the bedrock of much politics here for sure.
But I know nothing about the CMO. No idea where she hails from. I just think that if she's the best weapon in the present fight we keep her, if there's someone better get them in.

I can envisage media friendly Jason Leitch doing a replacement ad. Always popular with media.
- Subtitles: Covid-19 advice from National Clinical Officer, Jason Leitch.
V/O: We're serious about everyone following the guidelines. Stay safe, Stay home, Save lives. Wash your hands with soap.
Don't be like my friend, the ex-CMO, Catherine Calderwood and ignore your own advice!
In 'news as entertainment' terms the story is an (un)welcome distraction. Has people, privilege and all the things journalists rely on. Imagine ScotGov will see how much weight it can carry and then take action. Handling of this helps to deflect other questions and is our version of the non self isolating UKGov.

Would have expected more mention of recent events on that link.

Looks like she went to Fife last weekend as well, in which case she will be toast as will anyone who knew that.
Sad and stupid if that should come to pass.

I've not been following this too closely. Where was she on "herd immunity", "no-one could have predicted it", "the science has changed", Cheltenham / Murrayfield, and "masks don't help", or even "bad flu"? If she is doing better than CMO average on that stuff, we should hang onto her.

doubt there'll be much queuing up to answer that one

Yeah smacked of she went last week and got grassed to sun who were in bushes when she came this weekend
I like her but she will resign methinks

Are the journeys of Sun journalists really necessary? ;-)

So, "integrity" = being caught and then saying you're very sorry. Er, nope.
No fan of the Sun, but who says it wasn't a local who snapped Calderwood on the golf course? Maybe not many paparazzi operating out of East Neuk but could be a neighbour with telephoto lens?

photo credit is for sun glasgow photographer
Posted 5 years ago # -
Crowriver, see upthread she was there last weekend too, locals spotted her and grassed her to the sun for this weekend
Posted 5 years ago # -
@gembo, yes I was aware of that. Calderwood probably would have been in East Neuk for Easter too if hadn't been caught out.
That she has yet to offer her resignation also speaks volumes about "integrity". Must be expensive running a large house and a holiday home to boot...

I think we should be told about her husband...

“
In a clear signal Sturgeon planned to defend her, Calderwood stood alongside the first minister during the briefing, being broadcast live online. Calderwood said she was “truly sorry” for breaching her own advice not to travel, and acknowledged NHS staff had attacked her conduct.
“I have seen a lot of the comments from members of the public on Twitter today, people calling me a hypocrite, people telling me what hardships they have endured while following my guidance,” she said. “What I did was wrong, I’m very sorry. It will not happen again.”
Facing repeated questions about Calderwood’s actions, Sturgeon was asked several times whether Calderwood had offered her resignation. Sturgeon refused to confirm or deny that she had, but hinted Calderwood had offered to step down and that her offer was rejected.
She said: “The chief medical officer made clear to me she would do whatever she is required to do to in my judgment to be in the best interests of the country. It is my view that that would not be her resignation because that would deprive me and the government of her expertise.”
As the controversy intensified during the day on Sunday, a Scottish government advert featuring Calderwood’s warnings against all unjustified travel was still being broadcast, in which she said: “This is a vital update about coronavirus. To help save lives, stay at home. Anyone can spread coronavirus.
“Only go out when absolutely necessary for food, medicine, work or exercise … Stay home. Protect Scotland’s NHS and save lives.”

Allowing Ms Calderwood to stay in post but stop doing public-facing work seems a very odd decision.
Who's going to read her lines out? Will they be accountable or will the CMO? It implies that we've lost trust in her but the first minister hasn't.

she's resigned

Inevitable
Posted 5 years ago # -
Good. The right decision. Let's hope Deputy CMO can step up to the challenge. Calderwood can still advise if needed.
Posted 5 years ago # -
I hope nobody dies as a result, though we'll never know of course. What a sad mess.
Posted 5 years ago # -
@iwrats
Cast your mind back a few weeks. How many might die as an end result of the abject failure to cease expecting the general public to carry on commuting for an hour or more each way via the usual over-subscribed public transport options, to sit for eight hours in a large open plan office.
That is/was the lot of many ordinary people.
The CMO may have had a politically anointed duty not to spook the herd, but the rest of us were looking on aghast.
