Driving to the countryside and walking – where more time is spent doing the latter than the former – is among a list of reasonable excuses for Britons leaving their home during the coronavirus lockdown, according to advice issued to police.

@fimm: Also highlighted by chdot earlier today.

It does make me wonder whether this will lead to a change in other organisations' policies. For example, the Pentland Hills Regional Park web page explaining the closure of their car parks states:

...we know many of you still want to visit the Pentland Hills for your daily exercise. Under the government guidelines this is still acceptable, but you must not travel there by motorised vehicle.

which appears to be at odds with the advice given to police and now made public.

@ejstubbs, i imagine the carparks will remain closed until lockdown restrictions are weakened. Otherwise they will be rammed.

Still 800-900 dying every day. Long way to go

“which appears to be at odds with the advice given to police and now made public”

Yes, though that was/is advice for England.

Strictly advice for Police in England - as in ‘don’t try to enforce rules/advice too much, the punters don’t like it’.

BBC made it very public yesterday so expect more driving around the countryside looking for parking spaces (Scotland too).

Tim developed a wider interest in public transport which led him to becoming chair of a new body, the Greater Manchester Transport Consultative Committee, formed to give a collective voice for bus and train passengers to pedestrians, cyclists, and older and disabled people.

He recalled it identified the “basic injustice” of motorists benefiting from improvements at the expense of those using public transport.

I think the confusion is caused by "the law" and "government guidance" saying two different things. The law allows you to leave the house for exercise, but says nothing about driving to/from the place you exercise. Government guidance is not to drive for exercise.

However, the advice to the police is about interpreting the law, as they do not enforce guidance (regardless of what certain officers may think). So, people have been advised not to drive anywhere to exercise, but doing so is not automatically a breach of the law - where the line between lawful/unlawful could be drawn is set out in the guidance to the police. Although ultimately a matter for the courts.

The Good Store in Goldenacre had flour two days ago. they run a 'click and collect' service off their website, same day or next day, depending when you order.

bonus--there's a decent off license across the street.

That advice to police was interesting, as it suggested that 'exercise' could be taken more than once a day, providing it was actual exercise.

we ordered a fruit and veg box from Tay valley fruits (the ones who are usually in the middle of the market). Seems like good value to me. included a massive punnet of strawberries which smell amazing (as imported ones so often do not).

but posting here because in their list of 'extras' they include flour.

Message me with your email address if you want me to forward you their list and details.

We are now getting everything we need except milk* delivered from local producers.

*it is available by delivery but my kids drink too much

@SRD - good contact info on a flour supply opportunity.

...we know many of you still want to visit the Pentland Hills for your daily exercise. Under the government guidelines this is still acceptable, but you must not travel there by motorised vehicle.

We should be able to cycle out to city limits as transport - then start cycling as exercise after Balerno? ;-)

    From link -

A tiny number of virus organisms placed in the back of a person’s throat one time is not likely to lead to the average person getting “sick” with COVID. If we placed a tiny number of live viruses in the throats of 1,000 people, less than half would probably get sick. If we placed 1,000 or 1,000,000 viral organisms, the average person probably would get sick. And if we placed a tiny number of organisms 10 or 100 times in a week, the average person would also likely get sick because of the multiple exposures. This is because even in your throat, your body has protective countermeasures such as mucus and cilia and your blood and other fluids likewise have generic immune and other protections. They are just not as strong as we need them to be. Even as people get and recover from COVID or get a future vaccine, 100% of the population won't be 100% protected, but collectively we will be safe.

I believe this to be true - but it doesn’t seem to get much media coverage.

Obviously of importance in NHS/care settings, and sadly one reason for death rate of staff.

Other reasons - availability and careful use of PPE.

    Not UK of course -

Government also plans to contain spread of Covid-19 by banning weekend travel

@the canuck: AFAIK it's only in the Welsh government's version of the regulations that people are specifically limited to one period of outdoor exercise per day.

Exclusive: Hospitals across England to run out of supplies of the protective garments within hours

    ...

Hancock had sought to reassure MPs by stressing that 55,000 more gowns were due to arrive on Friday. However, those equate to about eight hours’ supply because the NHS is currently using 150,000 gowns a day.

Not so much, but parking attendants on mopeds are enforcing the parking restrictions above Balerno/Blinkbonny

Honestly speaking, little to stop ‘going for a drive’ but people seem less inclined, either through public spiritedness or lack of pubs/restaurants/shops/aforementioned parking

Mopeds above balerno will be to stop verge parking. This drives the farm crazier. (The verge parking not the mopeds)

As a country lad it was explained to me that the verge is part of the road. It's there to let large farm vehicles pass. Also of course a handy place to repair a puncture. Roads with narrow verges are dangerous. I hate to see them cut though.

@cyclingmollie, I am with the farmer. B.C. On a sunny day the Harlaw carparks would be rammed, the verge all the way down the access road to the actual road rammed. The verge outside the farmer’s mum and dad’s house rammed, the verge along the actual road rammed.

No way the farmer getting anywhere in his tractor.

Used to go to ceilidhs with the farmer. Strong and silent. Boy did the womenfolk get thrown in the air during dashing white sergeant, strip the willow and drops o’ brandy.

There is another farmer I am not with. He drives down cockburnhill road most mornings either in a massive tractor bigger than the road pulling an empty HGV log trailer or in a big red Chevrolet Jeep/Van also bigger than the road. Man, he ain’t stopping. I reside in the ditch when he comes by at speed.

However one farmer I am awarding plaudits to is Osborn of Harperig. He has taken 29 bags of rubbish from the verge and fields from little vantage on the A70 all the way to the crest at Harperig where the Quickenning begins (if you are going the other way). Osborn has taken a long stretch of the A70 and combed verges on both sides.

For fisherman Rhys there is no doubt coronavirus has changed things and will continue to do so.

He says: "If coronavirus didn't happen when it did what I am doing now wouldn't have happened at all. It didn't even cross my mind.

"It has shone a light on what's here and it's a market I hope to fulfil post-coronavirus and to carry on into the future."
