@SRD not sure to be honest.. I found: "It is our current understanding that the new case definition widens the net, and includes not only lab-confirmed cases but also clinically diagnosed cases based on symptoms and exposure,"

Could therefore be retroactive death counts, they may not have wanted to go back and change previously published numbers.

Not sure if people have found http://nextstrain.org/ncov . It's a good resource for getting an idea about wider transmission patterns.

    update from bax towers

seems to be a bog standard 'mild' flu viral. certainly i did not turn into a bat overnight, which as i understand it is the main feature of the wuhan strain.

    3/10 disappointed

Strong action, but too little too late from Trump. Suspending travel should have happened weeks ago (by all countries).

The fact the virus is already in the US, and people have to pay £800 to be tested is more of a problem. A 2 tier medical system which stops poor people getting tested means the virus is running rampant already.

BREAKING Italian medical chief, Roberto Stella, 67, dies from #coronavirus due to respiratory failure #COVID19 https://t.co/WMbRTgHcRo

I'm guessing he got good care too... Still trying to persuade my mum that maybe avoiding some of her many social events would be wise.

All that early prep has been wasted, a week and a bit off excrsise because of a cold, and my VO2 max has gone from 36 to 32 (Garmin fitness age 72).

An hour on the spin bike last night. Little bit worried as the bike didn't really do much for my fitness. It was the high intensity 90mins a week of Judo that did more. Since I've barred myself from Judo until this is over I'm worried fitness won't return. Need to do an hour every night for the next 2 to 6 week's.

    There's not much time left...

@baldcyclist have you tried running or brisk walking? i find that does a lot more for both wait loss and lung capacity,

@SRD I walk about an hour a day already to /from Home/station)work. Could up the pace a little.

@chdot I suspect that might change in a week or so...

    Indeed

Idle speculation that US could replace Trump as ‘not fit for purpose’!

3 surgeons at my wife's work +ve. Apparently not been to the hospital since returning from Italy. Don't know if any have been to NHS hospitals (most of the Spire surgeons are NHS surgeons working on the side to pay school fees).

I saw that article too, it's funny how Americans react when Presidents do 'socialist' things (I didn't think he had it in him).

Super-rich jet off to disaster bunkers amid coronavirus outbreak

So once all the world's billionaires are in their bunkers, a few external padlocks might just sort out a lot of issues ... (obviously we'd let them out eventually, once we'd put a decently redistributive taxation system in place)

    Family member of mine is

    a) a doctor,
    b) immune compromised,
    c) subject to cardiovascular problems, and
    d) in hospital

I asked if they wanted me to stay away for the duration and they said no, not unless I was myself showing symptoms. Subject to usual hygiene procedures of course, but an interesting view from someone whose life is at material risk if they get this thing.

For today's global numbers this European Union site is good. Thank goodness we are still in! ;-)
Scottish figures will be around 10% of UK total.

Clinical advisor Jason Leitch said that airport testing is a waste of time. Not accurate enough - resources best used elsewhere. (Like many I question this but he has experience and access to figures. He explained his view in detail yesterday on Radio Scotland). Planes are getting quiet now. Friend from La Spezia just flew out of Edinburgh yesterday on half empty plane.

Anyone who is more expert than me got thoughts on this:
    https://www.newsweek.com/young-unafraid-coronavirus-pandemic-good-you-now-stop-killing-people-opinion-1491797

"Put aside statistics. Here is how it looks in practice. Most of my childhood friends are now doctors working in north Italy. In Milan, in Bergamo, in Padua, they are having to choose between intubating a 40-year-old with two kids, a 40-year old who is fit and healthy with no co-morbidities, and a 60-year-old with high blood pressure, because they don't have enough beds. In the hallway, meanwhile, there are another 15 people waiting who are already hardly breathing and need oxygen."

"But why the urgency, if most people survive?

Here's why: Fatality is the wrong yardstick. Catching the virus can mess up your life in many, many more ways than just straight-up killing you. "We are all young"—okay. "Even if we get the bug, we will survive"—fantastic. How about needing four months of physical therapy before you even feel human again. Or getting scar tissue in your lungs and having your activity level restricted for the rest of your life. Not to mention having every chance of catching another bug in hospital, while you're being treated or waiting to get checked with an immune system distracted even by the false alarm of an ordinary flu. No travel for leisure or business is worth this risk."

I am not an expert but that article scares the hell out of me. Meanwhile we carry on commuting to work, washing our hands a lot, and faffing with bottles of alcohol gel.

Our work won't even put out paper towels so you can turn the taps off after use without using your just-cleaned hands. And we don't have mixer taps so it's scalding water or freezing water: you choose. We raised this and the solution is... to tell us to fill the basin with water that's at a comfortable temp. Pointed out there are no plugs. So now they're putting plugs in all the sinks. (Pity that filling the basin conflicts with NHS hand-washing advice re: running water!)
