    Can this be true??

The British government reacted desperately to delays in securing urgently needed supplies of personal protective equipment from Turkey on Monday evening, dispatching an RAF plane in an attempt to force Ankara to release them.

With four nation approach as people get confused with who is responsible for what? Obviously England is huge and it's difficult organising their Trust hospitals and getting figures from Care Homes.

Would NHS England do better if England had proper devolution?

Talk last week was that NHS here 'didn't get finger out' but a huge delivery of PPE supplies came in directly from China on Sat.

Oil price collapse - producers paying you to take oil (!) Climate change thread topic.

"Talk last week was that NHS here 'didn't get finger out' but..."

A mere 7 weeks after first case was diagnosed in Tayside on 1st March.

@Laidback, the Guarniad doesn't say it but the negative price is apparently only for one pipeline in North America (For now).

The article on more deaths in polluted areas is interesting. Is this correlation or causation. These area are likely to be higher density too and so more chance of early infection and rapid transmission.

If pollutants are shown to be a cause of worse conditions could it also explain why obesity is apparently also a factor. I'm generalising but obesity and spending too long driving often co-exist.

    Chinese factories now powering up;

Some of this pollution is ours, we exported it to China as we de-industrialised Europe.

On Saturday, Robert Jenrick, the communities secretary, announced at the daily Downing Street press conference that the consignment would arrive the following day. But sources have said the UK did not even seek export clearance from Turkey until the Sunday, after Jenrick’s commitment had been made.

I have just received a customs invoice for duty on the surgical masks a friend sent from China when they could not be had here. Fair enough, but of course this is the future from December. No more seamless shopping with Rose bikes.

Have traffic light timings been adjusted at all, given more people walking/cycling? I used both the crossings on the segregated bit of NCN1 twice in the last hour and to my amusement they changed instantly to amber, despite there being traffic.

Felt bad for the removals van which had to put the brakes on hard, however I feel he may have been travelling a tad above 20.

Police are given new powers to enforce two meter distancing rules in the work place

If they’re going to enforce 2m in the work place then there Is no way for schools to go back.

Pupils don’t work there but staff do.

I had wondered about staggered days. Upper school is out anyway in May. If we had half of the S1, 2, and 3 in at a time we might be able to spread them out but 2m all the time would be impossible.

I don’t see any chance of me running classes where we all wear masks. I’d spend most of my time policing that.

Scottish Green co-leader Patrick Harvie insists economic recovery must mean we stop undervaluing those people whose work we all rely on, such as cleaners and carers.

He seeks a commitment that public support will be directed to "clean, green industries" rather than high-carbon industry, those who pay "poverty wages" and those registered in tax havens.

The first minister agrees that economic recovery must be in line with the society and country we are trying to build.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-scotland-52324722

Fiona Hyslop was on Radio Scotland earlier saying vague things about ‘reducing carbon’ etc.

Certainly seems like good news - especially if you are a fan of discussions and "active consideration" (for when plain old consideration just isn't enough).

Turkey insisted that it was not responsible for the hold-ups, with sources adding that some export permissions were sought by the UK as late as Monday – after UK ministers had made repeated public statements saying the shipment was imminent.

Ümit Yalçın, Turkey’s ambassador to the UK, said: “Turkey did not delay anything. There is no responsibility for the Turkish government for the delay of this shipment. Whenever we received any request for help, we did our best to allow this shipment to go ahead.”

One Whitehall source claimed that while health officials had placed the order, it had not been appreciated that – like many other countries – Turkey had placed extra restrictions on the export of medical equipment as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

The public should wear homemade masks when they venture outdoors to help reduce the spread of coronavirus, according to scientists who claim Britain’s masks policy does too little to prevent infections.

Prof Sian Griffiths, who led the Hong Kong government’s investigation into the 2003 Sars epidemic, said Britain should adopt the same approach as the US, where people are advised to make their own “cloth face coverings” and wear them in public spaces.

Trish Greenhalgh, a professor of primary care health sciences at Oxford University who recently completed a review on face masks, also advocated the use of masks in public and suggested an old T-shirt combined with kitchen paper would suffice.

    "Good news"

If it happens. We're used to lots of warm words from politicians of all stripes, even targets - which then eventually turn into "shared ambitions".

There's a chance for some change to occur, sure. Edinburgh's recent record on delivery of infrastructure does not inspire huge confidence, however. As for the Scottish government and Transport Scotland, they've almost had to be dragged kicking and screaming into committing more finance by the Scottish Greens.

So we'll see, but I'm not holding my breath.

Scientists in China have discovered more than 30 mutations

The researchers said the findings indicate "the true diversity of the viral strains is still largely underappreciated".

The most aggressive strains created up to 270 times as much viral load as the least potent type, the scientists found.

That last bit might explain why some people get it so much worse than others?

30 mutations but only 11 patients?

I asked my pal who is an immunologist about the idea of different strains about a month back and he pointed out it was only one research paper.

Not sure if this is the same paper

Retroviruses have particularly high mutation rates, even in virus terms. So this thing will likely evolve and quickly under whatever pressure we put on it.

I was reading a bit of academic stuff about viral vaccines and now I'm thinking we'll have to get all neo-Victorian on this thing.

Hygiene, distance, testing, testing, quarantine. Colonies for anyone unfortunate enough to be an asymptomatic super-spreader. I don't think this level of discipline and organisation is compatible with many aspects of the present world including the widespread availability of military weapons in many countries and extreme grinding poverty.

And what happens even on this island if we have, say, another round of flash flooding in Cumbria?

    Indeed. Lovely bit from wikipedia;

When Soper approached Mallon about her possible role in spreading typhoid, she adamantly rejected his request for urine and stool samples, even coming after him with a meat cleaver.

Now replace the kitchen implement with an AR15 and off we go!

The last such facility to be established on the island was the Tuberculosis Pavilion, which opened in 1943. The Pavilion was rendered obsolete within the decade due to the increasing availability, acceptance, and use of the tuberculosis vaccine after 1945.
