You'd need to establish the colony well away from any midge populations, unless the colonists will all be expected to wear full-body nets.

Steve Bell of the Guardian has taken to drawing Boris Johnson’s face as a large backside with a tuft of yellow flax. This backside often espouses something called Bocialism.

These points are I believe irrefutable

@chdot, the Graun yet again using "UK" when it means England. Scotland's PPE stockpile warehouse was separate I seem to recall from reports. See here for confirmation:
    https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/politics/scottish-politics/2148454/an-in-depth-look-at-a-cross-border-coronavirus-row-as-nicola-sturgeon-accepts-ppe-at-centre-of-cross-border-row-came-from-english-stocks/

Anyway yeah these business transactions are among the "opportunities" to be found during a pandemic no doubt.

Ryanair planes won’t return to the skies if the airline is forced to leave the middle seat empty to comply with “idiotic” in-flight social distancing rules, its chief executive, Michael O’Leary, has said.

Police had a liveried van stopped and were questioning the occupants in Faucheldean of all places this evening. Which was nice as it was the van which had given me a fast close pass a few minutes earlier.

The Scottish Government is due to set out its strategy for exiting lockdown later today. So - will they suspend TRO/RSO requirements? Provide real funding for temporary cycle lanes, wider pavements and filtered permeability? Clearly indicate that they expect local authorities to take such action?

Anything less means they are not serious about walking and cycling and are happy to see an explosion in the number of people driving.

Ryanair planes won’t return to the skies if the airline is forced to leave the middle seat empty

It is a completely bogus argument to say that, "We can’t make money on 66% load factors"

As long as all airlines have to follow the same rules i.e. the playing field is level, then of course you can make money with a 66% full plane - you simply need to increase the fares by 51%. And if customers won't tolerate that, don't fly the route.

Ryanair took my money instantly for flight to Malaga and back. BUt still not returned it, they are what you might call feckers

It would be 50 percent if all costs the same but plane would be lighter with less people luggage and food so use less fuel

BTW there are a few mentions of 'travel' in the document, two of 'transport', but none of 'cycling' or 'active travel'.

Okay, I see that this document has one clear purpose. Making it look like the Scottish Government is doing something (setting out a strategy) that the dastardly UK Government has so far refused to do.

Scotland publishes framework for leaving lockdown and adjusting to 'new normal'

    Mentions cycling...

Scotland must adjust to “new normal” of living with Covid-19, which may include cycling in and out of strict lockdown at short notice

@Morningsider, indeed. It would appear the preferred turn of phrase is having a "grown-up conversation". Presumably as opposed to the infantile one south of the border?

EDIT: - BBC's political team have picked up on this.

    ---

The BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg wonders if, given the FM has made this announcement in order to keep the public 'in the know', is the UK government risking treating the public like children if they do not do the same?

It's alright that document. Nothing new, nothing unexpected. Quite a reassuring way of saying that nothing will ever be the same again.

    There are political elements;

The austerity driven response to the 2008 financial crash did not work and worsened the inequality that was part of its cause; we must not repeat those mistakes.

but I guess there can't not be when so many vultures are circling with various hideous plans to exploit the situation we're in.

its getting closer to now or never for the uk, isn't it

never been such an apposite time to end social inequality via universal basic income, overhaul the rentier economy, etc

a classic post-war dividend, if you like

just a real shame we have these charlatans at the helm, it could have been oh so different

i didn't really see the "grown-up conversation" spiel as much more than, we'll let the broad sweep of public opinion decide how best to proceed in the long term, no way are we going to be on the hook for this. which is possibly fair enough if the public have a reasonable citizen-centric euro-view

that said, many more drivers out today i note

    Oh, indeed.

    We'll know what the story is when the Scottish Government responds to this clarion call;

    https://www.scottishlandandestates.co.uk/news/open-letter-scottish-government-seeking-clarification-support-country-sports-tourism

If the playgrounds of Mohammed Bin Rashid al-Maktoum and his pals are bailed out it will be a dark day indeed.

Some companies have decided loackdown is over already...

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52393074

"On Thursday, other firms including Jaguar Land Rover, Aston Martin and Taylor Wimpey said they would return to work in May."

    Essential.

Wandered with the family to the shops on Morningside Road. Social distancing now impossible - not tricky or awkward, actually impossible. A wall of parked cars, narrow pavements, enough traffic to make stepping off the pavement an unattractive option and a decent number of other pedestrians.

I felt particularly bad for the few proper oldsters who had ventured out. We gave them as wide a berth as possible, we even ran as a group to avoid/give space to people, but maintaining a safe distance was simply impossible.

case numbers not dropping very quickly. Whitty himself says R0 seems to be cloes to 1 meaning we're close to the knife-edge point of (low) exponential growth of cases.

Assuming the plan isn't to significantly drop case numbers, bring out a widespread contact tracing network and aim to slowly fully re-open the economy... then..

My speculation (not based on any calculations) is you could try to : trade a few more businesses re-opening (bumping R0 up a few percent) if you brought out a strict cotton mask wearing policy in all public places (bring it down a few %).

My wish list would be for only cycle lane and tram construction to re-start initially. This is however unlikely to be how it happens.

@bax, "never been such an apposite time to end social inequality via universal basic income, overhaul the rentier economy"

A pity then that Labour have gone back to centrist triangulation and not frightening the (Tory) horses.

What it says ‘after’ will be more important -

However, the spokesperson added: “Creating an entirely new social security system is unlikely to be possible during the crisis.”

That must have been horrible. The motor traffic just has to go.
