Philip Hammond says a plan to allow the economy to escape the lockdown must be published next week, because the country will be “living with Covid” for a long time.

Most of the arrests are at parties in the west. Edinburgh has much lower number of arrests per. Head of population than glasgow or N Lanark et cetera

The number of new cases of Covid-19 being diagnosed is still much too high to allow any easing of the lockdown soon, leading scientists have warned, as the virus death toll in UK hospitals passed 20,000 on Saturday.

The home secretary, Priti Patel, described the figure as a “terrible milestone” and a “deeply tragic and moving moment”. She said it showed the need for the British public to “stay strong” and remain at home for the foreseeable future.

Although Ord draws a distinction between natural and anthropogenic (human-made) risks, he argues that this line is rather blurry when it comes to pathogens, because their proliferation has been significantly increased by human activity such as farming, transport, complex trade links and our congregation in dense cities.

Yet like so many aspects of existential threat, the idea of an engineered pathogen seems too sci-fi, too far-fetched, to grab our attention for long. The international body charged with policing bioweapons is the Biological Weapons Convention. Its annual budget is just €1.4m (£1.2m). As Ord points out with due derision, that sum is less than the turnover of the average McDonald’s restaurant.

Q: What do we know about that intermediate host – is it the “poor pangolin”, as it’s come to be known?

A: I don’t see any reason to assume that the virus passed through pangolins on its way to humans. There is an interesting piece of information from the old Sars literature. That virus was found in civet cats, but also in raccoon dogs – something the media overlooked. Raccoon dogs are a massive industry in China, where they are bred on farms and caught in the wild for their fur. If somebody gave me a few hundred thousand bucks and free access to China to find the source of the virus, I would look in places where raccoon dogs are bred.

His view is Sweden just has the deaths now, everyone will get them later, once lockdowns are lifted.

Impact maybe double a bad flue season.

Once antibody tests available, will show half the population will have had it already.

I think public opinion is beginning to change in Sweden against current policy...

The United Nations’ poverty expert Philip Alston has attacked the UK government’s coronavirus response as “utterly hypocritical” after successive administrations implemented policies of austerity and public-sector cuts.

    Back a stage

If anyone knows a TV production company, I want to offer the solution to @crowriver's concerns with a make-over programme, - ideally to get a pilot/taster aired whilst everyone is still on lock-down.

    Promoting the programme with :
"Get to drive a new electric car, available 24/7, from £5/month (subscription) & pay only for what you use"
"Drive a new car, and cut your transport costs by around £3000/year"

We've got a couple of weeks to develop this at least
