@MediumDave: Went round the Pentlands for a bit (very quiet once away from the roads). A while later I came back through Blinkbonny and counted the cars again. The number had more than doubled!

The other day my walk took me up past the Braid Hill golf course clubhouse. The sizable parking area in front was not closed off in any way. A fair number of cars were parked there including two from which dogs were being unloaded, clearly preparatory to being walked on the golf course.

Although I perviously suggested that spot-checking folks on the golf course itself would likely reveal mostly locals, it would surely be a simple job for the polis to hang around such a large and apparently well-used parking area to have a quiet word with people obviously not complying with the "don't drive to exercise" guidance.

And again, Braid Hills Drive had a number of cars parked at the side here (where the verge is getting cut up quite badly after the recent rain) and in the layby near the now-closed-off ex-doggers' car park. And there are always a few cars parked up on Braid Road by the access to the Hermitage driveway.

Based on observations locally, therefore, I increasingly get the impression that the "don't drive to exercise" guidance is not being enforced inside the City Bypass.

“its going to go badly wrong again, isn't it”

    Depends

Some people will (want to) continue with some version of social distancing.

Some of the most susceptible will already have caught it.

Depends a lot on if a ‘second wave’ looks likely to happen, whether Govs (try to) reimpose lockdown AND if anyone takes any notice.

With NHS in fatigue/PTSD might be worse...

Deeply disappointing announcement from the Scottish Motorists' Party...

    ---

    Conor Matchett @conor_matchett

BREAKING: Low Emission Zones planned for Scotland's biggest cities including Edinburgh have been paused due to COVID-19.

Michael Matheson says it is "no longer practicable" for them to be introduced by the end of 2020...

Harry Burns tells MSPs he expects the R-naught number to increase as we ease lockdown but “we need to be prepared to be able to tighten restrictions if we see it is going up rapidly”. He says ideally it would be 0.5 before we relax restrictions - it’s currently around 0.7.

    @ejstubbs, "When lockdown first started..."

Aye for a few short days it was blissfully quiet. Then, pretty quickly the chancers realised that plod was not going to fine them for going for a drive any time they liked. Now pretty much everyone with a motor is at it. They're just not all doing it at once, like they did during the un-lockdown era. Sorry guv, my mistake, all those blokes in their convertibles and/or souped up Fiestas with boom boxes and mag wheels are key workers on essential journeys obvs.

3 more weeks confirmed in Scotland.

Dally Mail and Sun have headlines of picnics and freedom from Monday. Will England relax lockdown?

Pretty clear from watching yesterday's Prime Ministers Questions that the PM just blurted out "200,000 tests" and "easing of restrictions" to distract from his inability to answer any of Kier Starmer's questions. I doubt these had been discussed with anyone. This is where we are - people will die just to spare the PM a couple of minutes political discomfort.

    "Disgraceful (LEZs decision)"

Another couple you may have missed last month, announced quietly while Coronavirus bill was being passed:

    Transient Visitor Levy "abandoned"
25p charge on single-use drinks cups as part of measures to cut down on waste "scrapped indefinitely"

Alas not at all surprising. If/when SNP elected with majority next year, expect most legislation adopted after pressure from Scottish Greens to be quietly dropped in the name of "economic recovery" (i.e. back to BAU)...

The report is based on the findings of a government simulation of an influenza pandemic, codenamed Exercise Cygnus. It concluded starkly that Britain was not adequately prepared for a flu-like pandemic’s “extreme demands”.

The 2017 report is likely to raise questions over whether ministers ever implemented key recommendations pertaining to the care home sector.

It contained 26 key recommendations, including boosting the capacity of care homes and the numbers of staff available to work in them. It also warned of the challenge facing homes asked to take in patients from hospitals.

Westminster government also likely factoring in that there are at least 30,000 fewer people eligible to die in subsequent waves caused by premature lockdown easing.

The director of public health for the Madrid region has resigned, apparently in protest at the regional government’s decision to seek to loosen lockdown restrictions in the area of Spain hardest hit by the coronavirus.

We are on main road so often end up shouting HUP hup hup as well as clapping if cyclist going by. We like to wave at Gladys over the road. She lives on her own. All over in 60 seconds

It is Nurse Gladys Immanuel over the road, she shares her pad with her cat Jimi Hendrix. She did try to sell it a while back thinking because it has an indoor swimming pool it would fetch a handsome dividend but really swimming pools are somewhat albatross like. Her gate also featured with a big knife superimposed on front cover of EEN during the wester hailes taxi battle

@bill. Thanks for the product, I thought you might put it next to the milk and went out there realising today was the day as scavengers all over balerno will steal anything (eg the milk is hidden behind the motor car as putting it on the doorstep too vulnerable)

During our visit on Monday, the hotel seems remarkably calm. “The levels of behaviour have been what you would expect in a hotel, not a hostel,” says Samantha Dorney-Smith, a nurse with the Pathway charity, which lobbies for better healthcare for rough sleepers. She has been registering residents with GPs (often for the first time) and getting them help with drug, alcohol and mental health services. She describes the exercise as “a very interesting social experiment”. “If you give people what they want, they tend to take the sensible decisions. The whole focus has been on keeping people quiet and happy – and maybe we should continue like that, because, funnily enough, it works.”

Neighbour who I've been getting the shopping for told me today that they've lost six friends so far.

    I don't have words.

I think I've been to exactly six funerals in my entire life.

Be glad you’ve been able to help people and are reducing their chance of catching it.

All my elderly neighbours are ruled by dogs so are getting exercise - and supermarket deliveries.
