@Frenchy the number mount up as we age. You are but a boy. Must be really hard on families now with no real closure.

Three modest changes to lockdown in Wales
The first minister of Wales, Mark Drakeford, says it is too soon to ease the lockdown in Wales.

Apologies if it's been posted before, but I found this interesting and perhaps useful to some https://erinbromage.wixsite.com/covid19/post/the-risks-know-them-avoid-them

@sallyhinch, I am germphobic at the best of times so that just confirms how manky my work is and even had a plan of my office.
Curling bad, volleyball bad, restaurants bad, sneezing bad, even breathing in the shoe leather epidemiology of the restaurant.
Not sure of all the facts but the general thrust of taking an hours exercise on your own on a bike out in the boondocks is fine.

Singing also bad! Let's hope for a long hot summer so we can just spend our lives outdoors.

@sallyhinch, choirs bad, singing on your tod fine I reckon
Meatpacking factories the worst?

But where are people contracting the infection in the community? I regularly hear people worrying about grocery stores, bike rides, inconsiderate runners who are not wearing masks.... are these places of concern? Well, not really. Let me explain.
In order to get infected you need to get exposed to an infectious dose of the virus; the estimate is that you need about ~1000 SARS-CoV2 viral particles for an infection to take hold, but this still needs to be determined experimentally. That could be 1000 viral particles you receive in one breath or from one eye-rub, or 100 viral particles inhaled with each breath over 10 breaths, or 10 viral particles with 100 breaths. Each of these situations can lead to an infection.
“
So basically from being close to someone who has it.
Still not clear (to me) whether people who have it but not yet developed symptoms are breathing out ‘large amounts’ or not.
Posted 5 years ago # -
@chdot, the case study of the restaurant in the article was an analysis of who an asymptomatic person infected. Most at his table and several down wind and several upwind due tot he turbulence of the air con but nobody at two other tables. Shoe leather epidemiology? Maybe they contact traced the diners that night? Details not obvious.

“Not sure of all the facts but the general thrust of taking an hours exercise on your own on a bike out in the boondocks is fine.“
Well yes.
Problem is (still) the messaging.
‘Don’t go out’
Ok
‘Except for ... ‘
Mmm
‘Exercise once a day for 1/2hr’ (or is it an hour now?)
Ok, part of that is to reduce the number of people out at the same time (and trying/not trying to suitably distanced) and (to some extent) reduce chance of accidents.
The can/can’t drive to exercise (as long as exercise time is longer than drive time) ‘guidance’ messed things up.
Presume no guidance expected on balance between drive time and shop time for DIY stores and garden centres??

“@chdot, the case study of the restaurant”
Ta (hadn’t read that far).
So problem is all these people who have it without letting on...
Wonder whether they are more likely to be found in supermarkets or garden centres??

Well asymptomatic folk might not know they have it hence wearing a mask to stop you giving it to others is a good idea. I mean like the masks @SRD made for me. Not surgical PPE stuff that is still really only for NHS.
The Flymo that @unhurt gave me finally died. So I do need to go B and Q but queues are not my thing. Can always order one on-Line but keen to cut the bleeding grass this pm. Might be reduced to trying it with the strimmer boy that makes a dogs breakfast of it from previous broken flymos. THis will be my 4th in twenty years but only the 2nd I have ever bought. I stick with this piece of kit because a. Still got the blades and b. Lightest model suits the slope.
Neighbour two doors down burning garden waste again. ANy thoughtful person would wait until 5pm to stop Gembo’s washing (including all my buffs which also work as DIY masks) not smell of woodsmoke. I dont mind smelling of woodsmoke but not in freshly laundered bike kit.

Mowers in LIDL at the moment. Where's your nearest? Also possibly bigger Asdae might have that sort of thing, unless you're picky.
Posted 5 years ago # -
Not picky, LIDL in w hailes.
B and Q was a massive Q more like Q and Q And Q and Q. We drove by then proceeded to Markies at the Gyle, was completely empty.
Clotted cream purchased to go with the Scones made from @Bill’s product.

@gembo: B and Q was a massive Q more like Q and Q And Q and Q.
That's actually useful to know.
The missus is hankering after some new herb plants (sage and rosemary in particular) and I did offer to cycle down to B&Q to check it out (which was partly the motivation behind my earlier question about the busy-ness of the towpath west of Slateford). Doesn't look like I'll bother now, at least until after the weekend - and then maybe a crack of dawn raid.

Grant Shapps doing the Covid briefing right now:
£2bn plan for more walking/cycling. £250m for emergency pop-up measures as well as emergency changes to statutory processes.
Voucher scheme for bike repair/maintenance & more cycle to work accessibility.
"Tough" new standards for cycling infrastructure.
At least one zero emission city centre. (while Scot Gov delay LEZs!)
Fast tracking trials of e-scooters.
Who would have thought a conservative government would've been the one to announce this.
Posted 5 years ago # -
It appears remarkable
Posted 5 years ago # -
If it happens yes remarkable whilst Scot Gov looking very parochial.
Posted 5 years ago # -
"Scot Gov looking very parochial."
Indeed. Perhaps the internal rationale runs along the lines of "but we have hills and wind and rain in Scotland so cycling and walking not practical here".
England £250 million, Scotland a paltry £10 million (of diverted/recycled existing active travel budget). That's less than half what it should be even on a population basis (Barnett formula maybe slightly higher?).
Posted 5 years ago # -
Portobello not following guidance much. At least Aldi restricting people in the shop.
Posted 5 years ago # -
“Scot Gov looking very parochial.”
Yep. Has even less of a plan in most regards than the UK Gov.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-52578939
“Ms Sturgeon says the Scottish government is not confident that "R" is comfortably below one, but instead is "hovering around 1".
Have suspected this for some time. # of new infections is not decreasing in the way it is in rUK.

i thought the best part was (!) Grant Shapps answering the inevitable 'not all of us are cyclists" question. not only was he well enough briefed (well done transport dept) to give chapter and verse on 'most journeys are under 3 miles', he was very convincing on the point that even if cycle journeys only increase by 5%, the benefit will be for all road users.
Posted 5 years ago # -
This looks significant (DfT press release):
Fast-tracked statutory guidance, published today and effective immediately, will tell councils to reallocate roadspace for significantly-increased numbers of cyclists and pedestrians
Tell councils - no shared vision, no going through Sustrans. Councils are being told, by a Tory government, to get cracking.
EDIT: I'll just put a link to this tweet from the UK Secretary of State for Transport here:
https://twitter.com/grantshapps/status/1259163285322072064
You know, in case anyone feels the need to remind any particular councillors about their party line.

The Statutory Guidance is extraordinary:
We recognise this moment for what it is: a once in a generation opportunity to deliver a lasting transformative change in how we make short journeys in our towns and cities. According to the National Travel Survey, in 2017-18 over 40% of urban journeys were under 2 miles – perfectly suited to walking and cycling.
Active travel is affordable, delivers significant health benefits, has been shown to improve wellbeing, mitigates congestion, improves air quality and has no carbon emissions at the point of use. Towns and cities based around active travel will have happier and healthier citizens as well as lasting local economic benefits.
The government therefore expects local authorities to make significant changes to their road layouts to give more space to cyclists and pedestrians. Such changes will help embed altered behaviours and demonstrate the positive effects of active travel. I’m pleased to see that many authorities have already begun to do this, and I urge you all to consider how you can begin to make use of the tools in this guidance, to make sure you do what is necessary to ensure transport networks support recovery from the COVID-19 emergency and provide a lasting legacy of greener, safer transport.
Local authorities in areas with high levels of public transport use should take measures to reallocate road space to people walking and cycling, both to encourage active travel and to enable social distancing during restart (social distancing in this context primarily refers to the need for people to stay 2 metres apart where possible when outdoors). Local authorities where public transport use is low should be considering all possible measures.
Measures should be taken as swiftly as possible, and in any event within weeks, given the urgent need to change travel habits before the restart takes full effect.

@ejstubbs - a couple of weeks ago I bought a potted rosemary from the veg section of Tesco. I repotted it immediately and hardened it off very carefully, but it now seems to be growing away quite cheerfully. Might be an option to consider if you don't want to brave Q & Q.
Posted 5 years ago # -
@Stickman The "Reallocating road space: measures" section is quite something. It's like reading a document by Spokes, not the government!

@ejstubbs , secret herb garden at Old Pentland Road are doing collections.

Really?
“
Edinburgh saw weekday increases of up to 252% and weekend increases of up to 454% in the first three weeks of April. Only one area of the city, close to the university, saw a fall.
