    From SRD link -

Many people think COVID-19 kills 1% of patients, and the rest get away with some flulike symptoms. But the story gets more complicated. Many people will be left with chronic kidney and heart problems. Even their neural system is disrupted. There will be hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, possibly more, who will need treatments such as renal dialysis for the rest of their lives. The more we learn about the coronavirus, the more questions arise. We are learning while we are sailing. That’s why I get so annoyed by the many commentators on the sidelines who, without much insight, criticize the scientists and policymakers trying hard to get the epidemic under control. That’s very unfair.

    ...

Let’s be clear: Without a coronavirus vaccine, we will never be able to live normally again. The only real exit strategy from this crisis is a vaccine that can be rolled out worldwide. That means producing billions of doses of it, which, in itself, is a huge challenge in terms of manufacturing logistics. And despite the efforts, it is still not even certain that developing a COVID-19 vaccine is possible.

"Bike retailers are permitted to remain open during the lockdown, but are operating “one in, one out” policies and banning customers from trying out cycles before they buy."

How can you sell a bike without allowing a demo? Customers can wear gloves and masks. Bar grips can get wiped down. Risk very low surely? Just Eat bikes still out.

Good news about re-allocation of road space and trust Edinburgh will start doing more than the easily avoidable bits at Braids, Leith Links and Silverknowes. Probably not even 2 miles.

Yippee, residents of Scotland can now go out for exercise more than once a day.

    Er.....that's it.

Cue lots of drivers "exercising" their cars several times a day...

@chdot: Interesting, as I've struggled to find the only-exercise-once-a-day advice/guidance documented on the ScotGov web site (it's not enshrined in the regulations like it is in Wales). Could be a complete non-announcement?

“We have to understand that we’re riding this tiger, we’re not directing it,” Osterholm said. “This virus is going to do what it’s going to do. What we can do is only nibble at the edges, and I think it’s not a good message to send to the public that we can control this virus in a meaningful way. ... What we have to tell people honestly, what they want to hear, they don’t want it sugarcoated and they don’t want it coated in fear. But somewhere between now and tomorrow, next year, we’re going to see 60 to 70% of Americans ultimately infected with this virus. What we have to do is to figure out how not just to die with the virus but also how to live with it. And we’re not having that discussion. As Lewis Carrol once said: ‘If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.’”

When asked whether the United States is ready to reopen the economy, Osterholm said it was “unclear” what that exactly means.

    Boris lecture in short

    (England)

    Can exercise outside more

    Sit in parks

Go to work but avoid PT

New system like terrorism - currently on 4, ‘might get to 3rd’

Quarantine for air passengers only (soon)

Mention of doing something about care homes

    Nothing really new or certain

    More -

Further to a post of mine a few days ago re. driving to exercise, I see that Braid Road is now closed to motor vehicles between the mini-roundabout at the junction with Hermitage Drive, and the entrance to the Braid Hills Hotel car park. The closed section is also lined with "no parking" cones (which seems a little redundant).

Also noted that Braidburn Terrace is currently closed to motor vehicles westbound. IIRC a permanent change to that effect was in plan prior to lockdown.

Parking at the Braid Hills golf clubhouses is still unrestricted, and being fairly well used (though with little indication that it's being used as an alternative to the Hermitage...yet). I can imagine that it's difficult to restrict this particular location effectively anyway, since people could just park on the approach road - which is nice and wide - instead. As it's a through route with residential properties throughout its length they probably can't just close a chunk of the road without denying some folks access to their properties. (I reckon it does look like classic curtain-twitcher country along there, though, so I'm a little surprised that no-one has resorted to clyping on the driving-to-exercisers. OTOH it is also classic big SUV and flash Merc country so maybe the local sentiment is sympathetic to drivists.)

Did I understand Boris correctly that he is actively encouraging people to drive to any park of their choosing and sit on the benches for the day?

That is if they aren't driving to work. Although he conceded that cycling or walking to work are also acceptable.

Don’t think those were his exact words, but police would be hard pushed to argue he meant something different.

@chdot, you are right. The official transcript has:

"You can sit in the sun in your local park, you can drive to other destinations, you can even play sports but only with members of your own household."

So sitting in you park is an explicitly local activity but you can drive anywhere (within England) and exercise for as long as you like. Golf appears to be permitted too as long as you don't go into the clubhouse.

I'm also wondering why they chose this wording in what I assume was a carefully scripted speech:

"And when you do go to work, if possible do so by car or even better by walking or bicycle."

Why not flip it on it's head and ask people to walk or cycle to work where possible.

And Prof Susan Michie, of University College London, tweeted: “Lack of clarity can cost lives. Scottish government a good example of clear & consistent messaging. No spin, no self-congratulation, no defence, just honest communication, including of the uncertainties. Engenders trust & adherence; avoids confusion & anxiety.”

    ...

“If they weren’t involved in this key decision then how can you continue to claim that you are following the science? To make such a point that you are following the science and then not involve your two most senior scientists in a key decision like this would strike me as being worrying. It’s substantial mixed messaging.”
